〜とおりに

とおりに

exactly as / in the same way as

← All N4 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

〜とおりに means you do something in exactly the same way as what you saw, heard, read, or planned. The part before とおり is the model (words, instructions, a map, a plan), and the action after it follows that model without changing it. Use the dictionary form for a model that comes from now on (今から言うとおりに) and the た-form for one that you have already seen or heard (さっき言ったとおりに).

§1Structure

Verb dictionary form / た-form + とおり(に) (言うとおりに, 言ったとおりに). Noun + の + とおり(に) (説明書のとおりに). Noun + どおり(に), joined directly and read どおり (予定どおりに). に can be left out (思ったとおり、〜). At the end of a sentence it becomes 〜とおりだ / 〜とおりです.

§2Examples

  • 私が言うとおりに、書いてください。

    わたしがいうとおりに、かいてください。

Please write exactly as I say.

  • 先生が言ったとおりに、練習しました。

    せんせいがいったとおりに、れんしゅうしました。

I practiced just as the teacher told me.

  • 説明書のとおりに、本棚を作った。

    せつめいしょのとおりに、ほんだなをつくった。

I built the bookshelf according to the instructions.

  • 会議は予定どおりに終わりませんでした。

    かいぎはよていどおりにおわりませんでした。

The meeting did not end as scheduled.

  • レシピのとおりに作りましたか。

    レシピのとおりにつくりましたか。

Did you make it according to the recipe?

  • 見たとおりに話してください。

    みたとおりにはなしてください。

Please tell me exactly what you saw.

  • テストは思ったとおり、難しかった。

    テストはおもったとおり、むずかしかった。

The test was difficult, just as I thought.

  • 私がやるとおりに、やってみて。

    わたしがやるとおりに、やってみて。

Try doing it the way I do it.

§3Common mistakes

  • Joining a noun to とおり without の. With の the word is read とおり; without の it is joined directly and read どおり. Wrong: 説明書とおりに作りました. Right: 説明書のとおりに作りました or 説明書どおりに作りました.
  • Using the て-form or the ます-stem before とおり. Only the dictionary form or the た-form is used. Wrong: 先生が言ってとおりに / 先生が言いとおりに. Right: 先生が言ったとおりに / 先生が言うとおりに.
  • Choosing the wrong tense before とおり. If you already heard or saw the model, use the た-form: さっき聞いたとおりに書きました. If the model comes from now on, use the dictionary form: これから言うとおりに書いてください.

§4How it's different from similar grammar

〜のように (like / similar to)
〜のように says that something is similar to something else: 田中さんのように上手に話したいです (I want to speak well like Mr. Tanaka). 〜とおりに says that you copy or follow a model exactly: 田中さんが話したとおりに言ってください (Please say it exactly as Mr. Tanaka said it). With のように the two things only resemble each other; with とおりに the content is the same.
〜まま (leaving a state as it is)
Both can be translated with 'as', but they are different. 〜まま means a state is left unchanged while you do something else: 靴をはいたまま、部屋に入りました (I went into the room with my shoes still on). 〜とおりに means you follow a model or an instruction: 母がしたとおりに、野菜を切りました (I cut the vegetables the way my mother did).

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

In grammar-form questions, the connection is the usual point: noun + の + とおりに, or noun + どおりに with no の. The choices often mix とおりに with ために, あいだに, and まま, so check whether the first part is a model that the action follows. In sentence-ordering questions, remember the fixed order 'verb た-form → とおり → に' (先生が 言った とおり に). In reading passages, とおり appears in instructions and notices, for example 次のとおりです ('as follows') and 説明のとおりに ('as explained').

§6Quick check (3 questions)

  • 1. Choose the word that fits the blank: 地図__とおりに歩いて、ホテルに着きました。

    ちず__とおりにあるいて、ホテルにつきました。

  • 2. Which sentence is correct?

  • 3. What does this sentence mean? 「友だちが教えてくれたとおりに、駅まで歩きました。」

    ともだちがおしえてくれたとおりに、えきまであるきました。
