〜に反して

にはんして

Contrary to (expectations, hopes)

〜に反して says that what actually happened is the opposite of what people expected, forecast or hoped. The part before に反して names the expectation, and the part after it tells the real result. It sounds a little formal and is common in news and writing. In casual talk, people often use 〜と違って instead.

予想に反して、試験はとても簡単でした。

よそうにはんして、しけんはとてもかんたんでした。

Contrary to my expectations, the exam was very easy.

Structure

Noun + に反して (予想に反して). The written form is Noun + に反し. Before a noun: Noun + に反する + noun, or Noun + に反した + noun (予想に反した結果). The noun is usually a word for an expectation, a forecast or a hope, such as 予想, 期待, 予報 or 希望. With a rule or a law (規則, 法律), Noun + に反する means 'to go against / break' it.

Examples

  • 天気予報に反して、午後から雨が降ってきた。

    てんきよほうにはんして、ごごからあめがふってきた。

    かいしゃのきそくにはんすることはしないでください。

Please don't do anything that goes against the company rules.

Common mistakes

3
  • Using に反して to compare two people, places or days. に反して is used with an expectation, a hope or a rule, not for 'unlike A, B is ...'. ✕ 兄に反して、弟は背が高い → ○ 兄と違って、弟は背が高い (Unlike my older brother, my younger brother is tall).
  • Adding の before a noun. に反する and に反した connect directly to the noun: ✕ 予想に反するの結果 → ○ 予想に反する結果 / ○ 予想に反した結果.
  • Following に反して with a result that matches the expectation. If you thought the test would be hard and it was hard, に反して does not fit. Use 予想どおり (as expected) for a result that matches.

How it's different from similar grammar

2
〜と違って (unlike)
と違って compares two things and says they are different: 昨日と違って今日は暖かい (Unlike yesterday, today is warm). It is used for people, places and times, and also in casual talk for 'different from what I expected'. に反して does not compare two things. It says the result went against an expectation, a hope or a rule, and it sounds more formal: 天気予報に反して、雨は降らなかった (Contrary to the forecast, it didn't rain).
〜とおりに / 〜どおり (just as)
どおり is the opposite of に反して. Use 予想どおり when the result matches the expectation: 予想どおり、試合は長くなった (As expected, the match went on for a long time). Use 予想に反して when the result is the opposite: 予想に反して、試合はすぐ終わった (Contrary to expectations, the match ended quickly).

How this shows up on the JLPT

In the grammar-form section, look for signal nouns such as 予想, 期待, 予報 and 希望 before the blank, and a result that goes the other way after it. The wrong choices are often other noun + に phrases such as について, にとって and によって. In reading passages, に反して (and the written に反し) tells you that the writer's main point is the surprising result that follows.
