〜に対して(対比)

にたいして

In contrast to / Whereas

'A のに対して、B' puts two different people or things side by side and shows that they are opposite or clearly different: 'A is X, whereas B is Y'. It states the difference as a fact, without surprise or complaint, so it is common in explanations, reports and comparisons with numbers. This is different from 〜に対して meaning 'toward / against' (先生に対して).

姉は外で遊ぶのが好きなのに対して、妹は家で本を読むのが好きだ。

あねはそとであそぶのがすきなのにたいして、いもうとはいえでほんをよむのがすきだ。

My older sister likes playing outside, whereas my younger sister likes reading at home.

Common mistakes

2
  • Forgetting の, or adding the wrong word before のに対して. Verbs and い-adjectives take の; な-adjectives and nouns take なの: ✗ 増えているに対して → ✓ 増えているのに対して; ✗ 静かのに対して / ✗ 静かだのに対して → ✓ 静かなのに対して; ✗ 会社員のに対して → ✓ 会社員なのに対して.
  • Using のに対して for a result that goes against your expectation. That is のに: ✗ 毎日練習したのに対して、試合に負けた → ✓ 毎日練習したのに、試合に負けた. のに対して compares two different people or things; it does not show surprise or disappointment.

How it's different from similar grammar

2
〜に対して (toward / against)
The other に対して comes right after a noun for a person or thing and shows who or what an action or feeling is directed at: お客さんに対して、丁寧に話す (speak politely to customers). The contrast に対して usually comes after a whole clause + の, and a second, different subject follows: 兄がよく話すのに対して、弟はあまり話さない (My older brother talks a lot, whereas my younger brother doesn't talk much). If you see のに対して after a clause, it is the contrast meaning.
〜反面 (on the flip side)
反面 shows two opposite sides of the same person or thing: この町は静かな反面、店が少ない (This town is quiet, but on the flip side there are few shops). のに対して compares two different people or things: この町が静かなのに対して、となりの町はにぎやかだ (This town is quiet, whereas the next town is lively). One subject with two sides → 反面; two subjects → のに対して.

How this shows up on the JLPT

In N3 grammar-form questions, check the connection before に対して: after a clause you need の (or なの for な-adjectives and nouns). Questions may also ask you to tell the contrast meaning from the 'toward' meaning, or to choose between のに対して, 反面 and のに. In reading passages, のに対して often appears in texts that compare data, countries or generations, and the question may ask about the difference.
