〜一方(で)

いっぽう(で)

On the other hand / While

'A 一方(で)、B' puts two things side by side. It can show two different sides of one thing (便利な一方で、家賃が高い), a contrast between two people or things (兄は〜一方、弟は〜), or two activities that someone does in the same period (働く一方で、大学で勉強している). It sounds a little formal and is common in writing and the news.

この町は交通が便利な一方で、家賃が高い。

このまちはこうつうがべんりないっぽうで、やちんがたかい。

This town has good transport, but on the other hand the rent is high.

Common mistakes

2
  • Mixing it up with 〜一方だ ('keeps getting more and more'). 一方だ ends the sentence and shows a change in one direction: 物価は上がる一方だ (Prices keep rising). 一方(で) joins two parts: 物価が上がる一方で、給料は上がらない (Prices go up, while wages don't).
  • Wrong connection with な-adjectives and nouns. Use な (or である) after な-adjectives and である after nouns: ✗ 便利だ一方で → ✓ 便利な一方で; ✗ 学生の一方で → ✓ 学生である一方で.

How it's different from similar grammar

2
〜一方だ (more and more)
〜一方だ comes at the end of a sentence after a verb of change and means that something keeps moving in one direction, often a bad one: 町の人口は減る一方だ (The town's population keeps falling). 〜一方(で) is in the middle of a sentence and adds a second, different point: 町の人口は減っている一方で、観光客は増えている (The town's population is falling, while the number of tourists is rising).
〜反面 (on the flip side)
〜反面 shows two opposite sides (good and bad) of the same thing: この部屋は広い反面、駅から遠い (This room is big, but on the flip side it's far from the station). 〜一方(で) can do this too, but it is wider: it can also compare two different people or things (姉は〜一方、妹は〜), and it can show two activities done in the same period (働く一方で、勉強もしている). 反面 is usually not used for these two.

How this shows up on the JLPT

In N3 grammar-form questions, you may need to choose between 一方で, 一方だ and 反面. Check the position: at the end of the sentence, it is 一方だ; in the middle, joining two points, it is 一方(で). Also check the connection before it (便利な一方で, 学生である一方で). In reading passages, 一方、 at the start of a sentence tells you that a contrasting point is coming.
