〜といっても

といっても

Although I say ... / It's ..., but only

'A といっても、B' means 'It is true that A, but B': the speaker admits A, then corrects what the listener might imagine from it. B usually shows that the real degree is smaller or different from what A suggests (料理ができるといっても、簡単なものだけです). It is often used to be modest or to give a more exact picture.

料理ができるといっても、簡単なものしか作れません。

りょうりができるといっても、かんたんなものしかつくれません。

I say I can cook, but I can only make simple things.

Structure

Plain form + といっても. Verb: できるといっても, 住んでいたといっても. い-adjective: 寒いといっても. な-adjective: 有名(だ)といっても. Noun: 旅行(だ)といっても, 社長(だ)といっても. After な-adjectives and nouns, だ is often dropped; な and の are not used. It can also start a sentence: 〜。といっても、〜.

Examples

  • 冬は寒いといっても、コートがいらない日もある。

Common mistakes

2
  • Using といっても for any 'but' or 'even though'. The second part should correct or limit the first part, not just show an opposite result. For a simple unexpected result, use のに: ✗ 毎日練習したといっても、試合に負けた → ✓ 毎日練習したのに、試合に負けた. With といっても: 毎日練習したといっても、一日十分だけだ (I practiced every day, but only ten minutes a day).
  • Adding な or の before といっても. Use the plain form; with な-adjectives and nouns, use だ or nothing: ✗ 有名なといっても → ✓ 有名(だ)といっても; ✗ 休みのといっても → ✓ 休み(だ)といっても.

How it's different from similar grammar

2
〜のに (even though)
のに shows surprise or disappointment that the result goes against what you expected: 高い店なのに、あまりおいしくなかった (Even though it was an expensive restaurant, the food wasn't very good). といっても does not show surprise; it corrects the picture: 高い店といっても、一人三千円ぐらいだ (It's an expensive restaurant, but it's only about 3,000 yen per person). Ask yourself: is the second part a surprising result (のに), or a more exact description of the first part (といっても)?
〜というより (rather than)
〜というより says that the first word is not the best word, and gives a better one: 今日は暖かいというより、暑い (Today is hot, rather than warm). 〜といっても keeps the first word as true, but limits it: 今日は暖かいといっても、夜はまだ寒い (It's warm today, but the evenings are still cold). というより replaces A; といっても accepts A and then adds a limit.

How this shows up on the JLPT

In N3 grammar-form questions, 〜といっても is often a choice next to のに, というより and としても. Look at the second part: if it makes the first part smaller or more exact (〜だけ, たった, しか〜ない, 〜ぐらい), といっても fits. In reading passages, the information after といっても is the writer's real point, so questions often ask about it.
