〜というより

というより

Rather than (saying) A, B

〜というより is used when you first think of one word for something, and then choose a better one: 'it is not really A; B is a better way to say it'. It does not compare two different things; it compares two ways of describing the same thing. The more accurate word always comes after というより.

今日は涼しいというより、寒いです。

きょうはすずしいというより、さむいです。

Today it's not so much cool as cold.

Structure

Verb / い-adjective (plain form) + というより: 食べるというより, 涼しいというより. な-adjective + というより (だ is usually left out): 静かというより. Noun + というより: 先生というより. After というより comes the word or description that fits better.

Examples

  • 田中さんは先生というより、友達のような人だ。

    たなかさんはせんせいというより、ともだちのようなひとだ。

Mr. Tanaka is more like a friend than a teacher.

  • この部屋は静かというより、さびしい感じがする。

    このへやはしずかというより、さびしいかんじがする。

This room feels lonely rather than quiet.

  • 弟は食べるのが速くて、食べるというより飲んでいるみたいだ。

    おとうとはたべるのがはやくて、たべるというよりのんでいるみたいだ。

My little brother eats so fast that it looks more like drinking than eating.

  • これは趣味というより、もう仕事じゃないですか。

    これはしゅみというより、もうしごとじゃないですか。

Isn't this already a job rather than a hobby?

  • 映画はつまらなかったというより、話がよく分からなかったんです。

    えいがはつまらなかったというより、はなしがよくわからなかったんです。

It's not that the movie was boring; I just couldn't really follow the story.

  • このかばんは、安いから買ったというより、色が気に入ったから買いました。

    このかばんは、やすいからかったというより、いろがきにいったからかいました。

I bought this bag not so much because it was cheap, but because I liked the color.

Common mistakes

3
  • Putting the words in the wrong order. The better description comes after というより. If today is cold, say ✓ 涼しいというより寒い, not ✗ 寒いというより涼しい (that means 'it is cool rather than cold').
  • Using というより like より to compare two things. ✗ 今日は昨日というより寒い → ✓ 今日は昨日より寒い. というより does not mean 'than'; it chooses between two words for one thing.
  • Adding な after a な-adjective. ✗ 静かなというより → ✓ 静かというより (or 静かだというより). というより follows the plain form (静か / 静かだ), so な is not added.

How it's different from similar grammar

2
A は B より (than)
より compares two different things on one scale: 今日は昨日より寒い (today is colder than yesterday). というより compares two words for the same thing and chooses the better one: 今日は涼しいというより寒い (today is not cool; 'cold' is the right word). With より you need two things (今日, 昨日); with というより you need two descriptions (涼しい, 寒い).
〜といっても (although I say ..., it's only ...)
といっても keeps the first word but says it is smaller or less than it sounds: 料理ができるといっても、簡単なものだけです (I can cook, but only simple things). というより replaces the first word with a better one: 料理ができるというより、料理が好きなんです (It's not so much that I'm good at cooking; I just like it).

How this shows up on the JLPT

In N3 grammar questions, 〜というより is often placed next to より, といっても and に比べて. Ask yourself: is the sentence choosing a better word for one thing? If yes, というより is the answer. In sentence-ordering questions, remember 'A というより B': the more accurate word is last. In reading passages, the part after というより shows the writer's real opinion, so questions about 'what the writer thinks' often point there.
