JLPT N5

〜は〜より〜

より

A is more ... than B

← All N5 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

より means 'than' and marks the thing you compare with. In A は B より大きいです, A is the topic and A is the bigger one; B is only the standard. Japanese adjectives have no comparative form like 'bigger' or 'more quiet', so より alone shows the comparison. より always comes after B, the opposite of English 'than B' and Vietnamese 'hơn B', where the word comes before B.

§1Structure

Noun A + は + Noun B + より + い-adjective / な-adjective (+ です). The adjective keeps its normal form: 大きいです, 静かです, 暖かかったです. より can also come before an adverb + verb: わたしより漢字をたくさん知っています. Words of degree go after より: ずっと (much), 少し (a little). Another common order is B より A が〜: 肉より魚が好きです.

§2Examples

  • 電車はバスより速いです。

    でんしゃはバスよりはやいです。

    Trains are faster than buses.

  • この町は東京より静かです。

    このまちはとうきょうよりしずかです。

This town is quieter than Tokyo.

  • 兄はわたしよりずっと背が高いです。

    あにはわたしよりずっとせがたかいです。

My older brother is much taller than I am.

  • そのかばんはこのかばんより安いですか。

    そのかばんはこのかばんよりやすいですか。

Is that bag cheaper than this bag?

  • 今年の冬は去年より暖かかったです。

    ことしのふゆはきょねんよりあたたかかったです。

This winter was warmer than last year.

  • リンさんはわたしより漢字をたくさん知っています。

    リンさんはわたしよりかんじをたくさんしっています。

Lin knows more kanji than I do.

  • この店はあの店より安いですが、おいしくないです。

    このみせはあのみせよりやすいですが、おいしくないです。

This restaurant is cheaper than that one, but the food isn't good.

  • わたしは肉より魚が好きだ。

    わたしはにくよりさかながすきだ。

I like fish better than meat.

§3Common mistakes

  • Putting より on the wrong noun. より marks the standard, not the 'winner'. To say 'Tokyo is bigger than Osaka': ✗ 大阪は東京より大きいです (this says Osaka is bigger) → ○ 東京は大阪より大きいです. Vietnamese speakers should note that 'hơn' comes before B (lớn hơn Osaka), but より comes after B (大阪より).
  • Changing the adjective or adding a word for 'more' because English says 'bigger' or 'more quiet': ✗ 東京は大阪より大きくです / ✗ 東京は大阪よりもっと大きいです (when you only mean 'bigger'). The plain adjective is enough: ○ 東京は大阪より大きいです. よりもっと is possible Japanese, but it means 'even more', so it changes the meaning.
  • Using より together with 一番 for the top of a group: ✗ 東京は日本の町より一番大きいです. より compares two things. For 'the most' among three or more, use 〜の中で / 〜で + 一番: ○ 東京は日本で一番大きい町です.

§4How it's different from similar grammar

〜のほうが (the ... one is more ...)
A は B より〜 talks about the topic A: 電車はバスより速いです (As for trains, they are faster than buses). (B より) A のほうが〜 picks one side out of two and is the normal answer to a どちら question: バスと電車とどちらが速いですか。— 電車のほうが速いです。 Both can be put together: バスより電車のほうが速いです. In the のほうが pattern the particle is が, not は.
〜ほど〜ない (not as ... as)
より is normally used in a positive sentence: 東京は大阪より大きいです (Tokyo is bigger than Osaka). To say the same thing from the other side with a negative, the usual pattern is B は A ほど〜ない (N4): 大阪は東京ほど大きくないです (Osaka is not as big as Tokyo).

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

In N5 grammar questions, より is tested as a particle choice next to から, まで and ほうが: a blank between two nouns and an adjective (A は B__大きいです) takes より. In sentence-building questions, remember that より sticks to the noun right before it (B → より), and that ずっと or 少し comes after より and before the adjective. In reading and listening, the question is often 'which one is bigger / cheaper?': the noun before より is only the standard of comparison, not the one that is bigger or cheaper, so do not choose it by mistake.

§6Quick check (3 questions)

  • 1. Choose the word that fits the blank: 飛行機は新幹線__速いです。

    ひこうきはしんかんせん__はやいです。

  • 2. わたしの部屋は弟の部屋よりせまいです。 Which statement is true?

    わたしのへやはおとうとのへやよりせまいです。

  • 3. Which sentence correctly says 'Today is hotter than yesterday'?
