JLPT N5

〜と〜とどちらが〜か/〜のほうが〜

とどちらが/のほうが

which is more ..., A or B? / A is more ...

← All N5 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

Use this pair of patterns to compare exactly two things. The question lists both things with と and asks どちらが ('which one'). どちら is used for things, people, places and times alike when there are two. The answer marks the chosen side with のほうが ('the ... side is more ...'). In both the question and the answer the particle is が, because the point of the sentence is which one.

§1Structure

Question: Noun A + と + Noun B + と + どちらが + い-adjective / な-adjective / adverb + verb + か. Answer: Noun + のほうが + adjective (+ です). You can add the other side with より: (B より) A のほうが〜. When the two are the same: どちらも + adjective (どちらも好きです). In casual speech どちら becomes どっち.

§2Examples

  • コーヒーと紅茶とどちらが好きですか。

    コーヒーとこうちゃとどちらがすきですか。

Which do you like better, coffee or tea?

  • コーヒーのほうが好きです。

    コーヒーのほうがすきです。

    I like coffee better.

  • 電車のほうがバスより速いです。

    でんしゃのほうがバスよりはやいです。

The train is faster than the bus.

  • 土曜日と日曜日とどちらがひまですか。

    どようびとにちようびとどちらがひまですか。

Which day are you freer, Saturday or Sunday?

  • わたしはどちらも好きじゃありません。

    わたしはどちらもすきじゃありません。

I don't like either of them.

  • 東京と京都とどちらがおもしろかったですか。

    とうきょうときょうととどちらがおもしろかったですか。

Which was more interesting, Tokyo or Kyoto?

  • 田中さんとリンさんとどちらが早く来ましたか。

    たなかさんとリンさんとどちらがはやくきましたか。

Who came earlier, Mr. Tanaka or Lin?

  • 夏と冬と、どっちが好き?

    なつとふゆと、どっちがすき?

Which do you like better, summer or winter?

§3Common mistakes

  • Using どれ, 何 or だれ when there are only two choices: ✗ コーヒーと紅茶とどれが好きですか / ✗ 田中さんとリンさんとだれが早く来ましたか. For two items the question word is どちら, even for people: ○ コーヒーと紅茶とどちらが好きですか / ○ 田中さんとリンさんとどちらが早く来ましたか. どれ, 何 and だれ are used with 一番 when there are three or more.
  • Dropping の or using the wrong particle after ほう: ✗ コーヒーほうが好きです / ✗ コーヒーのほうを好きです. ほう is a noun, so it needs の after the noun before it, and the particle after it is が: ○ コーヒーのほうが好きです.
  • Using は after the question word or in the answer: ✗ コーヒーと紅茶とどちらは好きですか / ✗ コーヒーのほうは好きです. A question word such as どちら is followed by が, not は, and the answer keeps the same が: ○ どちらが好きですか。— コーヒーのほうが好きです。

§4How it's different from similar grammar

〜(の中)で〜が一番〜 (the most ...)
With two things, ask with どちら and answer with のほうが: 犬とねことどちらが好きですか。— 犬のほうが好きです。 With three or more things, or a whole group, ask with 何 / どれ / だれ / どこ / いつ + が一番 and answer with 〜が一番: 動物の中で何が一番好きですか。— 犬が一番好きです。
〜たほうがいい (you should ..., advice)
Both use ほうが, but they do different jobs. Noun + のほうが compares two things: バスより電車のほうが速いです (The train is faster than the bus). Verb (た-form) + ほうがいいです (N4) gives advice to someone: 電車で行ったほうがいいです (You should go by train). Look at what comes before ほう: noun + の means comparison, a verb in the た-form means advice.

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

In N5 grammar questions, the blank is often the question word (どちら against どれ, 何 and だれ) or the particle after ほう (が against は and を). Count the things being compared: two things joined by と take どちら. In sentence-building questions, keep the order A と → B と → どちらが → adjective, and put の right before ほう. In listening, the answer to a どちら question is the noun before のほうが; the noun before より is the side that was not chosen.

§6Quick check (3 questions)

  • 1. Choose the word that fits the blank: 「サッカーと野球と__がおもしろいですか。」「サッカーのほうがおもしろいです。」

    「サッカーとやきゅうと__がおもしろいですか。」「サッカーのほうがおもしろいです。」

  • 2. 「春と秋とどちらが好きですか。」 Which answer is correct?

    「はるとあきとどちらがすきですか。」

  • 3. What does バスより自転車のほうが便利です mean?

    バスよりじてんしゃのほうがべんりです。
