JLPT N5

〜が好き・上手・わかる・ある

が with 好き / 上手 / わかる / ある (the thing a state is about)

← All N5 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

Words like 好き (like), きらい (dislike), 上手 (good at), 下手 (bad at), わかる (understand) and ある (have) do not show an action. They show a state: a feeling, a skill, or having something. The thing that the state is about takes が, not を. In English this thing is the object ('I like cats'), so learners often want to use を, but Japanese says わたしは猫が好きです.

§1Structure

(Person は) + Noun + が + 好き/きらい/上手/下手 + です (these four are な-adjectives). (Person は) + Noun + が + わかります/あります. Negative: 〜が好きじゃありません, 〜がわかりません, 〜がありません. The person who has the feeling or ability usually takes は; the thing takes が.

§2Examples

  • わたしは犬が好きです。

    わたしはいぬがすきです。

    I like dogs.

  • 兄は料理が上手です。

    あにはりょうりがじょうずです。

My older brother is good at cooking.

  • リンさんは漢字がわかりますか。

    リンさんはかんじがわかりますか。

    Lin-san, do you understand kanji?

  • わたしは野菜があまり好きじゃありません。

    わたしはやさいがあまりすきじゃありません。

I don't like vegetables very much.

  • 今日はお金がありません。

    きょうはおかねがありません。

I don't have any money today.

  • 子どものとき、わたしは魚がきらいでした。

    こどものとき、わたしはさかながきらいでした。

When I was a child, I disliked fish.

  • 先生の説明がよくわかりました。

    せんせいのせつめいがよくわかりました。

I understood the teacher's explanation well.

  • 弟は歌が下手だ。

    おとうとはうたがへただ。

My younger brother is bad at singing.

§3Common mistakes

  • Using を because the English verb takes an object: ×わたしは猫を好きです, ×日本語をわかります. 好き, 上手 and わかる show a state, not an action, so the thing takes が: わたしは猫が好きです, 日本語がわかります.
  • Changing 好き like a verb or an い-adjective: ×好きます, ×好きません, ×好きくないです. 好き, きらい, 上手 and 下手 are な-adjectives, so use です: 好きです, 好きじゃありません, 好きでした.
  • Using 上手 about yourself: わたしは英語が上手です. The grammar is correct, but it usually sounds like boasting. About your own skill, people usually say something softer, such as 英語が少しわかります or 英語はまだ上手じゃありません. Use 上手 to praise other people.

§4How it's different from similar grammar

を (object of an action)
を marks the thing that an action is done to: 音楽を聞きます (I listen to music), 漢字を書きます (I write kanji). が marks the thing that a state is about: 音楽が好きです (I like music), 漢字がわかります (I understand kanji). Ask yourself: is the last word an action that someone does, or a feeling / skill / having? For an action, use を. For a state, use が.
は (contrast)
犬が好きです simply says that you like dogs. When you compare two things, は takes the place of が: 犬は好きですが、猫は好きじゃありません (I like dogs, but I don't like cats). In a negative sentence, は is also common, and it hints that other things are different: お酒は好きじゃありません (I don't like alcohol, but other drinks are fine).

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

N5 Mondai 1 (choose the particle) often has a blank before 好きです, 上手です, わかります or あります, and を is usually one of the wrong choices. Look at the word after the blank: if it is one of these state words, choose が. In Mondai 2 (sentence ordering), build the block 'Noun + が + 好きです' first, and then put 'Person は' at the front. In listening, 'どんな〜が好きですか' is a very common question, so be ready to answer with 〜が好きです.

§6Quick check (3 questions)

  • 1. Choose the particle that fits the blank: わたしは甘いもの__好きです。

    わたしはあまいもの__すきです。

  • 2. Which sentence correctly says 'Lin-san is good at singing'?

  • 3. In which sentence does が mark the thing that a feeling is about (not the person or thing that does an action)?
