JLPT N5

〜ができる/〜ことができる

ができる/ことができる

Can / be able to

← All N5 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

This pattern says that someone can do something. It has two uses. One is a person's ability or skill, as in 漢字を読むことができます (I can read kanji). The other is that something is possible in a place or situation, as in ここでカードを使うことができます (You can use a card here). The thing you can do is marked with が.

§1Structure

Noun + ができる (スキーができます, 日本語ができます). Verb dictionary form + ことができる (泳ぐことができます). Negative: 〜(こと)ができません. Past: 〜(こと)ができました.

§2Examples

  • リンさんは漢字を読むことができます。

    リンさんはかんじをよむことができます。

    Linh can read kanji.

  • わたしは車の運転ができます。

    わたしはくるまのうんてんができます。

    I can drive a car.

  • 「田中さんはスキーができますか。」「いいえ、できません。」

    「たなかさんはスキーができますか。」「いいえ、できません。」

'Can you ski, Mr. Tanaka?' 'No, I can't.'

  • この店でカードを使うことができますか。

    このみせでカードをつかうことができますか。

Can I use a card at this shop?

  • 昨日は忙しかったですから、昼ご飯を食べることができませんでした。

    きのうはいそがしかったですから、ひるごはんをたべることができませんでした。

I was busy yesterday, so I couldn't eat lunch.

  • 兄は料理ができる。

    あにはりょうりができる。

  • この図書館では、本を二週間借りることができます。

    このとしょかんでは、ほんをにしゅうかんかりることができます。

At this library, you can borrow books for two weeks.

§3Common mistakes

  • Leaving out こと after a verb. ✗ 漢字を読むができます。 A verb cannot take が directly. Put こと after the verb to turn it into a noun phrase: ○ 漢字を読むことができます。
  • Using the ます-form or the て-form before こと. ✗ 泳ぎますことができます, ✗ 泳いでことができます. Use the dictionary form: ○ 泳ぐことができます。
  • Using を before できます. ✗ 日本語をできます, ✗ 泳ぐことをできます. The standard particle before できます is が: ○ 日本語ができます, ○ 泳ぐことができます. (を is still used inside the こと phrase: 漢字を読むこと.)

§4How it's different from similar grammar

Potential form (読める)
漢字を読むことができます and 漢字が読めます mean the same thing: 'I can read kanji.' The potential form (読める, N4) is shorter and is more common in everyday conversation. 〜ことができます sounds a little more formal, and you often see it in written explanations and notices, such as この図書館では本を二週間借りることができます.
〜が上手です (be good at)
できます only says whether you can do something or not. 上手です says that you do it well. ピアノができます means 'I can play the piano' (maybe only a little). ピアノが上手です means 'He/She is good at the piano.' Both mark the skill with が.

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

In N5 grammar questions, the blank is often the part between the verb and できます, and you must choose ことが (not のを, ことを or just が). Another type gives different verb forms before ことができます, and the answer is the dictionary form. In sentence-ordering questions, the fixed order is: verb dictionary form + こと + が + できます. In reading, notices such as 'ここで〜ことができません' tell you what is not possible in a place.

§6Quick check (3 questions)

  • 1. Choose the words that fit the blank: わたしは自転車に乗る__できます。

    わたしはじてんしゃにのる__できます。

  • 2. Which sentence is correct?

  • 3. 〜ことができます can show a person's skill, or that something is possible in a place or situation. Which sentence shows that something is possible in a place?
