〜のは/〜のが/〜のを

のは/のが/のを

Nominalizer の: doing ... is ~ / I like doing ... / I forgot to ...

← All N4 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

A verb cannot come directly before the particles は, が or を. Adding の turns the verb phrase into a noun, like '-ing' or 'to do' in English, so that it can be the topic, the subject or the object of the sentence. 〜のを忘れました means 'I forgot to do', and 〜のを知っていますか asks 'Do you know that ...?'. こと can also turn a verb into a noun, but in some patterns only one of the two is possible.

§1Structure

Verb plain form + の + は / が / を. Typical patterns: (1) verb dictionary form + のは + adjective です (起きるのは大変です). (2) verb dictionary form + のが + 好きです / きらいです / 上手です / 下手です / 速いです / 遅いです. (3) verb plain form + のを + 忘れました / 知っていますか / 見ました / 聞きました / 手伝います / 待ちます / やめます. Before の, the verb is always in the plain form (not the ます-form), and the subject inside the の-clause takes が, not は: 田中さんが結婚したのを知っていますか.

§3Common mistakes

  • Putting a verb directly before a particle, or using the ます-form before の. ✕ 泳ぐが好きです ✕ 泳ぎますのが好きです → ○ 泳ぐのが好きです. A verb needs の (or こと) to work like a noun, and the verb before の is in the plain form.
  • Using こと with verbs of seeing, hearing, helping or waiting. ✕ 子どもが泣いていることを見ました → ○ 子どもが泣いているのを見ました. ✕ 荷物を運ぶことを手伝いました → ○ 荷物を運ぶのを手伝いました. When the main verb is about something you directly see, hear or join in (見る, 聞く, 見える, 聞こえる, 手伝う, 待つ), use の.
  • Using の right before です to say what your hobby or dream is. ✕ わたしの趣味は写真をとるのです → ○ わたしの趣味は写真をとることです. In the pattern 〜は〜ことです, こと is used. 〜のです at the end of a sentence is understood as the explaining 〜んです.

§4How it's different from similar grammar

Verb + こと (nominalizer)
In many sentences both are possible, and の sounds more conversational: 日本語を話すのは楽しいです and 日本語を話すことは楽しいです are both correct. Only こと is used in fixed patterns such as 〜ことができる, 〜ことがある, 〜ことにする and 趣味は〜ことです. Only の is used when the main verb is about direct seeing, hearing, helping or waiting: 鳥が飛んでいるのが見えます (I can see birds flying). 忘れる and 知っている can take either, but の is more common in speech.
〜のは〜だ (emphasis: it is ... that ...)
Both start with a clause + のは, but what comes after it is different. With the nominalizer, the part after のは is a comment about the action, usually an adjective: 漢字を覚えるのは難しいです (Remembering kanji is difficult). In the emphasis pattern, the part after のは is a noun that is taken out of the clause and put in focus, such as a place, a time or a person: 漢字を教えてくれたのは田中さんです (The one who taught me kanji is Mr. Tanaka).

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

In grammar-form questions, you choose the particle after の by looking at the end of the sentence: 好き / 上手 / 下手 / 速い / 聞こえる / 見える → のが; 忘れる / 知っている / 見る / 手伝う / 待つ / やめる → のを; an adjective that comments on the whole action (楽しい, 難しい, 大変) → のは. Wrong choices often include のに and ので, which are different patterns. の versus こと is tested with 見る, 聞こえる and 手伝う (の) and with 趣味は〜です and できる (こと). In sentence-ordering questions, keep verb + の + particle together as one block.

§6Quick check (3 questions)

    ちちはやすみのひにりょうりを__すきです。

  • 2. Which sentence correctly says 'I forgot to turn off the light'?

  • 3. Choose the best phrase for the blank: となりの部屋でだれかが歌っている__聞こえます。

    となりのへやでだれかがうたっている__きこえます。
