JLPT N4

受身(物が主語)

うけみ

Passive with a thing as the subject (was built, is held, is used)

← All N4 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

When you describe a fact about a thing or an event and the doer is not important, Japanese makes the thing the subject and uses the passive. This style is objective, so it is common in explanations, news, guidebooks and textbooks: when something was built, where an event is held, what language is spoken, what something is made from. Unlike the passive with a person as the subject, it carries no feeling of being troubled.

§1Structure

[thing / event] は / が + passive verb (この寺は建てられました, 会議が開かれます). The doer is usually not mentioned because it is unknown, unimportant, or people in general. Time takes に (500年前に), place takes で (多くの国で), and a material takes から or で (米から作られます). When the creator is mentioned with verbs of making, such as 書く, 作る, 建てる and 発明する, によって is normally used, not に: ベルによって発明されました.

§2Examples

  • この寺は500年前に建てられました。

    このてらはごひゃくねんまえにたてられました。

This temple was built 500 years ago.

  • 来月、この町で大きな祭りが行われます。

    らいげつ、このまちでおおきなまつりがおこなわれます。

A big festival will be held in this town next month.

  • 日本の酒は米から作られます。

    にほんのさけはこめからつくられます。

Japanese sake is made from rice.

  • 英語は多くの国で話されている。

    えいごはおおくのくにではなされている。

English is spoken in many countries.

  • 次の会議はどこで開かれますか。

    つぎのかいぎはどこでひらかれますか。

Where will the next meeting be held?

  • この漢字は、今はあまり使われていません。

    このかんじは、いまはあまりつかわれていません。

This kanji is not used very much now.

  • 電話はベルによって発明されました。

    でんわはベルによってはつめいされました。

The telephone was invented by Bell.

  • 日本の車はいろいろな国へ輸出されています。

    にほんのくるまはいろいろなくにへゆしゅつされています。

Japanese cars are exported to many countries.

§3Common mistakes

  • Using the active form with the thing as the topic. △ この寺は500年前に建てました sounds as if the speaker built the temple. When you describe the thing and the builder is not the point, use the passive: ○ この寺は500年前に建てられました.
  • Marking the creator with に. △ この本は有名な先生に書かれました → ○ この本は有名な先生によって書かれました. With verbs of making (書く, 作る, 建てる, 発明する), the creator is normally marked with によって.
  • Using the wrong particle for the place or the material. ✕ 英語は多くの国に話されています → ○ 多くの国で話されています. ✕ 日本の酒は米に作られます → ○ 米から作られます. に after a place or a material would look like the doer.

§4How it's different from similar grammar

Passive with a person as the subject
The verb form is the same, but the viewpoint is different. With a person as the subject, the sentence tells what happened to that person, the doer is marked with に, and it often carries a feeling: わたしは部長に仕事を頼まれました (I was asked by my manager to do a job). With a thing as the subject, the sentence states a fact objectively, the doer is usually left out, and there is no feeling of trouble: この試験は毎年7月と12月に行われます (This exam is held every July and December).
〜てある (has been done and remains so)
Both can have a thing as the subject without naming the doer. The passive reports an event or a general fact: このポスターは先週はられました (This poster was put up last week). 〜てある describes the present state that remains because someone did something for a purpose, and you usually say it while looking at the result: 壁にポスターがはってあります (A poster has been put up on the wall, and it is there now).

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

This passive is frequent in N4 reading passages that explain places, products and events, so get used to reading 〜は〜に建てられました, 〜で行われます, 〜から作られています and 〜と言われています quickly. In grammar-form questions, you choose the verb form: if the subject is a thing and the verb is something people do to it (作る, 使う, 開く, 輸出する), choose the passive, not the active, potential or causative form. Particle questions test で for the place, から for the material and によって for the creator. In sentence ordering, によって comes directly after the person's name.

§6Quick check (3 questions)

  • 1. Choose the best form for the blank: この工場では、毎日たくさんのパンが__います。

    このこうじょうでは、まいにちたくさんのパンが__います。

  • 2. Choose the best phrase for the blank: このお寺は、ある有名な人__建てられました。

    このおてらは、あるゆうめいなひと__たてられました。

  • 3. Which sentence correctly means 'A concert will be held in this hall next week'?
