〜によって(原因)

によって

Due to / caused by

'A によって B' means 'B happened because of A'. It shows the cause in a formal, objective way, so it is common in news, reports and written explanations. B is usually a fact, often damage or a change, and not the speaker's wish or a request. This によって is different from によって for a means (by), for differences (depending on), and for the doer in a passive sentence (written by).

台風によって、多くの木が倒れました。

たいふうによって、おおくのきがたおれました。

Many trees fell down because of the typhoon.

Structure

Noun + によって (台風によって, 事故によって). Before a noun, use による: Noun + による + Noun (地震による被害, 不注意による事故). によって can also be followed by 、 (大雨によって、…). It is mostly used with nouns such as natural events, accidents and changes.

Common mistakes

3
  • Using によって for a small personal reason in everyday conversation. It sounds stiff, like a news report. ✗ 風邪によって、学校を休みました → ✓ 風邪で学校を休みました / 風邪をひいたので、学校を休みました.
  • Using によって (not による) right before a noun. ✗ 地震によって被害を調べる → ✓ 地震による被害を調べる. によって connects to the verb at the end (地震によって、ビルが倒れた); による describes a noun.
  • Putting a request or the speaker's wish after によって. ✗ 台風によって、家にいてください → ✓ 台風が来ているので、家にいてください. The part after によって is a fact that happened.

How it's different from similar grammar

2
ため(に) (because of — formal)
Both are formal ways to give a cause and are common in news. ため(に) can follow a whole clause (雪が降ったため、電車が遅れた) as well as a noun with の (大雪のため). によって usually follows a noun directly, often an event that causes a change or damage: 大雪によって、道路が使えなくなった. Station announcements often use ため: 事故のため、電車が遅れています.
によって (by means of)
The same words によって can show a means: インターネットによって、世界中の人と話せる (Through the internet, we can talk with people all over the world). In that case, a person uses the means on purpose. When によって shows a cause, the result simply happens and nobody chose it: 雷によって、停電が起きた (A power outage happened because of lightning).

How this shows up on the JLPT

In the grammar section, によって (cause) is tested against について, にとって, に対して and によると; look for a cause and its result, often in a news-like sentence. Questions also test による + noun (地震による被害). In reading passages, によって can mean cause, means or 'depending on', so decide the meaning from the context.
