Depending on / in some cases

Common mistakes
3
- Using によって (without は) before something that is true only for some cases. ✗ 人によって、辛い料理が苦手だ → ✓ 人によっては、辛い料理が苦手だ (Some people don't like spicy food). によって needs a word of difference such as 違う or 変わる after it: ✓ 人によって、好きな料理が違う.
- Putting a verb directly before によって. ✗ 何を買うによって値段が違う → ✓ 何を買うかによって値段が違う. With a question word such as 何, どこ or いつ, add か before によって.
- Using にとって for 'depending on'. ✗ 人にとって、考え方が違う → ✓ 人によって、考え方が違う. にとって means 'for (someone)' and is followed by an evaluation such as 大切だ or 難しい.
How it's different from similar grammar
2
- によって (by means of)
- Both use によって, so look at the end of the sentence. With a word of difference or change (違う, 変わる, さまざまだ), it means 'depending on': 学校によって制服の色が違う (The uniform color differs from school to school). With an action that someone does using a method, it means 'by means of': 話し合いによって問題を解決した (We solved the problem by talking it over).
- 〜にとって (for / from the point of view of)
- によって talks about many people or things and says they are not all the same: 人によって好きな色が違う (Favorite colors differ from person to person). にとって takes one person or group and gives an evaluation from their point of view: 私にとって、この色は特別だ (This color is special to me).
How this shows up on the JLPT
In N3 grammar-choice questions, check the end of the sentence: 違う, 変わる or さまざまだ is a strong hint for によって. For によっては, look for endings like かもしれない, ことがある or 〜人もいる, which talk about only some cases. Questions often mix these with にとって and について. In reading passages, 場合によっては and 人によっては are common.
