- Using において for ordinary daily actions. ✗ 公園において友だちと遊んだ → ✓ 公園で友だちと遊んだ. において is formal and fits events, official notices, and fields such as society or sports. For everyday actions, use で.
- Using において directly before a noun. ✗ 日本において習慣 → ✓ 日本における習慣 (customs in Japan). To modify a noun, use における.
- Using において for where a person or thing simply is. ✗ 机の上において本がある → ✓ 机の上に本がある. When you say where a person or an object is located, use に, not において.
How it's different from similar grammar
2
- で (at / in: place of an action)
- The meaning is almost the same, but the style is different. で is used everywhere, in speech and in writing: 駅の前で友だちに会った (I met a friend in front of the station). において is formal and sounds strange in casual talk. It is used for official events and in reports: 式は市民ホールにおいて行われる (The ceremony will be held at the city hall).
- 〜に関して (regarding / about)
- において shows the place, time, or field where something happens or is true: 教育において、先生の役目は大きい (In education, the teacher's role is big). に関して shows the topic that is talked about or studied: 教育に関して意見を書いた (I wrote my opinion about education). If you can say 'about', use に関して.
How this shows up on the JLPT
In N3 grammar-choice questions, において is often placed next to に対して, にとって and に関して. Look for a place, period, or field before the blank and a formal verb such as 行われる or 開かれる after it. In sentence-ordering questions, remember における + noun. In reading passages (news, notices), において and における often stand where you would expect で and での.
