〜に関して/〜に関する

にかんして/にかんする

Regarding / about (formal)

〜に関して shows the topic of talking, writing, asking or research: 'regarding X' or 'about X'. The meaning is almost the same as について, but に関して is more formal. It is common in news, business, school notices and official writing. In everyday conversation with friends, について is more natural.

Common mistakes

3
  • Using に関して before a noun. に関して connects to a verb; before a noun, use に関する (or に関しての): ✕ 歴史に関して本 → ○ 歴史に関する本.
  • Attaching に関して directly to a verb. Make the verb a noun with こと first: ✕ 留学するに関して → ○ 留学することに関して.
  • Using に関して for the other meaning of English 'about' (= approximately). に関して only shows a topic. For an amount or a time, use ぐらい / くらい: ✕ 30分に関して待った → ○ 30分ぐらい待った.

How it's different from similar grammar

2
〜について (about)
The meaning is almost the same. について is the everyday choice: 友だちと夏休みの計画について話した (I talked with my friends about our summer vacation plans). に関して sounds more formal and fits news, business and official notices: 駐車場の利用に関して、ご案内します (We will give you information regarding the use of the parking lot). Before a noun, について becomes についての and に関して becomes に関する.
〜に対して (toward, a target)
に関して shows the topic that people talk or think about: 先生は試験に関して説明した (The teacher explained about the exam). に対して shows the person or thing that an action or feeling is directed at: 先生は学生の質問に対して、すぐに答えた (The teacher answered the student's question right away). If something is done to or toward the noun (answering, being kind, protesting), use に対して.

How this shows up on the JLPT

In the grammar-form section, に関して / に関する is often tested together with について, に対して, にとって and によって. First decide whether the blank is followed by a noun (に関する) or a verb (に関して). Then ask what the noun is: a topic of talk or research points to に関して, a target of an action points to に対して, and a person who judges something points to にとって. The formal tone also makes it common in reading texts such as notices and emails.
