〜として
として
As (in the role of)
〜として shows the role, position, or kind of thing in which someone or something acts or is seen: 'as a student', 'as a meeting room'. The noun before it tells you in what capacity the action happens. 〜としては often introduces an opinion from someone's position, and 〜としての connects to a following noun.
田中さんは通訳として会議に参加しました。
たなかさんはつうやくとしてかいぎにさんかしました。
Mr. Tanaka took part in the meeting as an interpreter.
Structure
Noun + として. Before another noun, use Noun + としての + noun (親としての責任). With は, Noun + としては shows 'as for (someone's position)' or sets that role apart from others (私としては = speaking from my position).

- Using として to say 'for someone' when you judge how easy, hard, or important something is. That meaning needs にとって. ✗ 子どもとして、この本は難しい → ✓ 子どもにとって、この本は難しい (For children, this book is difficult). として is about the role in which someone acts.
- Forgetting の when として is joined to a noun. ✗ 大切なのは、教師として経験だ → ✓ 大切なのは、教師としての経験だ (What matters is experience as a teacher). Here として is joined to the noun 経験, so it must be としての. When として goes with a verb, no の is added: 教師として経験を積む (gain experience as a teacher).
- Putting a verb before として in the 'role' meaning. ✗ 教えるとして働いている → ✓ 先生として働いている. In this meaning, として follows a noun that names the role.

- 〜にとって (for / from the point of view of)
- として says in what role someone does something: 父は医者として病院で働いている (My father works at a hospital as a doctor). にとって says for whom something is important, easy, difficult, and so on: この仕事は、父にとって大切だ (This job is important to my father). If the rest of the sentence is an evaluation, not an action done in a role, use にとって.
- 〜としても (even if / even supposing)
- The としても that means 'even supposing' follows the plain form of a verb or adjective and states a supposition: 今から出るとしても、間に合わない (Even if we leave now, we won't make it). The として on this page follows a noun and names a role; with も it simply means 'also as': 彼は歌手としても有名だ (He is also famous as a singer).
How this shows up on the JLPT
In N3 grammar-choice questions, として is usually placed next to にとって, について and によって. Ask yourself: does the noun name a role or kind (student, interpreter, hobby, meeting room)? Then として fits. In sentence-ordering questions, watch for Noun + としての + noun. In reading passages, you will often see 〜として知られている (is known as) and 私としては (in my opinion).
