〜としても

としても

Even supposing that / even if

'A としても B' means 'even if we suppose A, B (still)'. The speaker imagines A, or accepts A for the moment, and says that B does not change because of it. B is often the speaker's decision, opinion or guess. This としても is different from 〜として ('as', a role), even though it looks similar.

たとえ雨が降ったとしても、試合は行われます。

たとえあめがふったとしても、しあいはおこなわれます。

Even if it rains, the game will be held.

Structure

Plain form + としても. Verb (行くとしても, 行けないとしても, 急いだとしても). い-adjective (高いとしても). な-adjective + だ (大変だとしても). Noun + だ (本当のことだとしても). It is often used with たとえ, 仮に or もし at the beginning.

Common mistakes

3
  • Adding な after な-adjectives or nouns. ✗ 大変なとしても / 休みなとしても → ✓ 大変だとしても / 休みだとしても. Use だ, just as in a plain sentence (大変だ, 休みだ).
  • Using としても for something that really happened. For a real past fact with an unexpected result, use のに or ても: ✗ 毎日練習したとしても、試合に負けた → ✓ 毎日練習したのに、試合に負けた.
  • Mixing up としても ('even if') and としたら ('if'). When the result follows from the supposition, use としたら: ✗ 明日晴れるとしても、ピクニックに行こう → ✓ 明日晴れるとしたら、ピクニックに行こう.

How it's different from similar grammar

2
ても (even if / even though)
ても follows the て-form and can be used both for imagined situations and for real facts: 薬を飲んでも、熱が下がらない (I did take the medicine, but the fever doesn't go down). としても follows the plain form and is used for a supposition, so it stresses 'even if we imagine this': たとえ薬を飲んだとしても、すぐには治らないだろう (Even if you took medicine, it wouldn't get better right away). としても also sounds a little more formal.
としたら (supposing that)
Both suppose something. としたら gives the result that follows from it: 電車が止まっているとしたら、タクシーで行こう (If the trains have stopped, let's take a taxi). としても says the result stays the same: 電車が止まっているとしても、会議には出なければならない (Even if the trains have stopped, I have to attend the meeting).

How this shows up on the JLPT

In the grammar section, としても often appears with たとえ or 仮に, and the choices may include としたら, として and としては; check whether the result changes (としたら) or stays the same (としても). Also watch the connection 名詞・な形容詞+だ+としても. In reading, としても often introduces the writer's point: 'even if that is so, ...'.
