〜ても

ても

even if / even though

← All N4 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

'A ても、B' means that B is true or happens in spite of A: the result you would expect from A does not come. It can be used for something that has not happened yet ('even if', 雨が降っても、行きます) and for something real ('even though', 薬を飲んでも、熱が下がりません). This ても is different from the ても in 〜てもいい (permission).

§1Structure

Verb て-form + も (降っても, 飲んでも). い-adjective: 〜くても (高くても; いい → よくても). な-adjective / noun + でも (不便でも, 日曜日でも). Negative: 〜なくても (行かなくても, 高くなくても, 日曜日じゃなくても).

§2Examples

  • 雨が降っても、試合をします。

    あめがふっても、しあいをします。

Even if it rains, we will play the match.

  • 薬を飲んでも、熱が下がりません。

    くすりをのんでも、ねつがさがりません。

Even though I take medicine, my fever doesn't go down.

  • 高くても、このカメラを買いたいです。

    たかくても、このカメラをかいたいです。

Even if it's expensive, I want to buy this camera.

  • 日曜日でも、父は仕事に行く。

    にちようびでも、ちちはしごとにいく。

Even on Sundays, my father goes to work.

  • 交通が不便でも、この町に住みたいですか。

    こうつうがふべんでも、このまちにすみたいですか。

Do you want to live in this town even if transportation is inconvenient?

  • 説明を聞いても、よく分からなかった。

    せつめいをきいても、よくわからなかった。

Even though I listened to the explanation, I didn't really understand.

  • お金がなくても、毎日楽しいです。

    おかねがなくても、まいにちたのしいです。

Even without money, every day is fun.

§3Common mistakes

  • Making the wrong form for adjectives and nouns. Wrong: 高いても / 高いでも / 日曜日ても / 不便ても. Right: 高くても / 日曜日でも / 不便でも. い-adjectives change い to くて; な-adjectives and nouns take で.
  • Using のに to say 'even if'. のに is only for real facts, so it cannot express a condition that may or may not happen. To say 'Even if it rains tomorrow, I'll go out' — wrong: 明日雨が降るのに、出かけます; right: 明日雨が降っても、出かけます.
  • Reading every ても as permission. 〜てもいいです means 'you may', but ても followed by another clause means 'even if': ここで食べてもいいです (You may eat here) / たくさん食べても、太りません (Even if I eat a lot, I don't gain weight).

§4How it's different from similar grammar

〜のに (even though — real facts, with surprise or complaint)
〜のに is used only for things that are real, and it shows the speaker's surprise or complaint: 雨が降っているのに、子どもたちは外で遊んでいます (Even though it's raining, the children are playing outside). 〜ても can also be used for things that have not happened, and it has no feeling of complaint: 雨が降っても、子どもたちは外で遊びます (Even if it rains, the children play outside). After ても you can use a request or the speaker's will (雨が降っても、来てください); after のに you cannot.
〜たら (if — the condition leads to the result)
With 〜たら, A leads to B: 雪が降ったら、バスで行きます (If it snows, I'll go by bus). With 〜ても, A does not change B: 雪が降っても、自転車で行きます (Even if it snows, I'll go by bicycle). たら is 'if A, then B'; ても is 'A or not, B just the same'.

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

N4 grammar-form questions give ても together with たら, と, and のに. Check the logic: if the second half goes against what you expect from the first half, choose ても (or のに when it is a real fact with a complaint); if the second half is the natural result, choose たら or と. Form questions ask for 〜くても and 〜でも. In sentence-ordering questions, いくら / どんなに at the start of a clause is a sign that the clause ends in ても. In reading passages, ても often comes just before the writer's real opinion, so read the part after it carefully.

§6Quick check (3 questions)

  • 1. Choose the form that fits the blank: このパンは、__おいしいですよ。 (This bread is tasty even when it is cold.)

    このパンは、__おいしいですよ。

  • 2. Choose the best form for the blank: 毎日練習__、なかなか上手になりません。

    まいにちれんしゅう__、なかなかじょうずになりません。

  • 3. What does this sentence mean? 「タクシーで行っても、間に合いません。」

    タクシーでいっても、まにあいません。
