JLPT N4
〜ば
If... then... (conditional)
Structure
Verb/adjective ば-form (e.g. 行けば、安ければ、静かなら)
A hypothetical conditional: if the condition in the first clause is met, the result in the second clause follows. One important exception: when the sentence ends in のに or a past tense and describes regret about something that did NOT happen (a counterfactual), ば is the natural choice even though the event is in the past — e.g. もっと早く出れば、間に合ったのに (If only I'd left earlier, I would have made it).
Examples
安ければ、買います。
やすければ、かいます。

If it's quiet, you may study here.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting to drop the final い before adding ければ on い-adjectives (incorrect: 安いければ; correct: 安ければ).
- Using ば for a specific, one-time event that already happened in the past, where たら sounds much more natural (avoid 昨日、早く出れば、間に合いました; prefer 昨日、早く出たら、間に合いました). Exception: a past-tense regret about something that did NOT happen (もっと早く出れば、間に合ったのに) still uses ば naturally — the rule above is about events that DID happen.
- Attaching ば directly to na-adjectives/nouns without なら (incorrect: 静かば; correct: 静かなら or 静かであれば).
How it's different from similar grammar
たら
たら can be used for almost any conditional, including one-time specific past events and sequential actions: 昨日、早く家を出たら、間に合いました (Yesterday, when I left home early, I made it in time). ば is more restricted to general, hypothetical, or repeatable conditions and sounds unnatural for one-time past events; ば works well for general truths like 安ければ買います (If it's cheap, I'll buy it, as a general rule).
なら
なら reacts to something already mentioned or known (a topic-based conditional) and can freely be followed by a suggestion, request, or command: 日本へ行くなら、パスポートを準備してください (If you're going to Japan, please prepare your passport). ば becomes unnatural right before a suggestion/request/command specifically when the ば-clause's own verb is volitional and shares the same subject as that suggestion (e.g. a plain ば-version of 行けば、パスポートを準備してください sounds odd). When the ば-clause is a state or non-volitional event instead — 分からなければ、先生に聞いてもいいですか or 明日晴れれば、海へ行こう — ば combines with a request or invitation just fine.
How this shows up on the JLPT
N4 grammar questions commonly test correct ば-conjugation for verbs, い-adjectives, and な-adjectives/nouns, and also test choosing between ば, たら, と, and なら based on context — pay attention to whether the situation is a one-time past event (favor たら) or a general rule (favor ば).
Quick check (3 questions)
1. Choose the correct ば-form of 高い (expensive).
2. Which sentence sounds unnatural because ば is used to describe a specific, one-time event that already happened in the past?
3. Which is the correct, natural ば-conditional form of the na-adjective 静か (quiet)?
