〜なら

なら

if that is the case / if you mean ...

← All N4 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

〜なら takes up what the other person has just said, or what the speaker sees in the situation, and gives advice, a request, an offer, or an opinion about it: 'if that is the case, then ...'. With a noun, it picks that noun as the topic: パソコンなら、駅前の店が安いです ('If it's computers you mean, ...'). Unlike 〜たら, the action after なら can happen before the action in front of it (車で来るなら、お酒を飲まないでください). For な-adjectives and nouns, なら is also the ordinary 'if' form (暇なら, 雨なら).

§1Structure

Verb plain form + なら (行くなら, 行かないなら). い-adjective plain form + なら (寒いなら). な-adjective stem + なら (暇なら — no だ). Noun + なら (パソコンなら — no だ). In conversation の / ん is sometimes put before なら after verbs and い-adjectives (行くのなら, 行くんなら).

§2Examples

    きょうとへいくなら、あきがいいですよ。

If you're going to Kyoto, autumn is a good time.

  • 寒いなら、窓を閉めましょうか。

If you're cold, shall I close the window?

    ひまなら、ちょっとてつだって。

If you're free, give me a hand for a moment.

  • パソコンなら、駅前の店が安いです。

If it's computers you're looking for, the shop in front of the station is cheap.

If you're coming by car, please don't drink alcohol.

  • 行きたくないなら、行かなくてもいいよ。

    たなかさんなら、もうかえりました。

Mr. Tanaka? He has already gone home.

§3Common mistakes

  • Putting だ before なら after a な-adjective or a noun. Wrong: 暇だなら / 学生だなら. Right: 暇なら / 学生なら.
  • Using なら for something that is sure to happen, with the meaning 'when / after'. Wrong: 春になるなら、花見をしましょう / 駅に着くなら、電話してください. Right: 春になったら、花見をしましょう / 駅に着いたら、電話してください.
  • Mixing up the order of the two actions. 日本へ行ったら、カメラを買いたいです means you want to buy the camera in Japan, after arriving. 日本へ行くなら、いいカメラを買ったほうがいいですよ is advice for someone who plans to go: buying the camera is preparation, most likely before the trip. Choose なら when the second action is advice or preparation for the plan.

§4How it's different from similar grammar

〜たら (if / when — A happens first, then B)
With 〜たら, B comes after A has come true: 沖縄へ行ったら、海で泳ぎたいです (When I get to Okinawa, I want to swim in the sea). With 〜なら, the speaker hears about a plan and gives advice about it; the advice can be for the time before A: 沖縄へ行くなら、飛行機の切符を早く買ったほうがいいですよ (If you're going to Okinawa, you should buy your plane ticket early). たら is also used for things that are sure to happen (12時になったら); なら is not.
〜ば (if — general or hypothetical condition)
〜ば states a condition and its result: 時間があれば、行きます (If I have time, I'll go). 〜なら reacts to what someone has said and can freely be followed by advice or a request: 時間がないなら、タクシーで行ったらどうですか (If you have no time, how about going by taxi?). For な-adjectives and nouns, the two meet in one form: 静かなら and 雨なら work as the ordinary 'if'.

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

N4 questions with なら are often short dialogues: A talks about a plan or a problem, and B answers with 〜なら + advice. If B's advice is about what to do before the plan happens (what to buy, what to prepare, when to go), なら is the answer and たら is wrong. In form questions, check that there is no だ (暇なら, 学生なら). Noun + なら also appears as an answer that picks up the topic of the question (A: 山田さんは? B: 山田さんなら、〜). In listening, なら at the start of B's line is a sign that a suggestion is coming.

§6Quick check (3 questions)

  • 1. Choose the best form for the blank: 日本へ__、その前に少し日本語を勉強したほうがいいですよ。

    にほんへ__、そのまえにすこしにほんごをべんきょうしたほうがいいですよ。

  • 2. Which sentence is correct?

  • 3. What does なら do in B's answer? A「すみません、山田さんはいますか。」 B「山田さんなら、食堂にいますよ。」

    A「すみません、やまださんはいますか。」 B「やまださんなら、しょくどうにいますよ。」
