〜ば〜ほど
ば〜ほど
The more ..., the more ...
This pattern says that when one thing increases in degree, another thing changes together with it: 'the more you do A, the more B'. The same word is said twice, first in the ば-form and then before ほど. The second half of the sentence usually shows a change or a degree, such as 上手になる, 難しい or いい.

にほんごは、べんきょうすればするほどおもしろくなります。
The more you study Japanese, the more interesting it becomes.
Structure
Verb ば-form + the same verb (dictionary form) + ほど: 読めば読むほど. For する-verbs: 練習すればするほど. い-adjective: 〜ければ + 〜い + ほど: 安ければ安いほど. な-adjective: 〜なら + 〜な + ほど: 便利なら便利なほど. The ば / なら part can be left out: 軽いほど, 便利なほど. Noun + ほど is also used for 'the more someone or something is ..., the more ...': 上手な人ほど.

Common mistakes
3
- Making the ば-form of adjectives wrongly. ✗ 安いければ安いほど → ✓ 安ければ安いほど (drop い, add ければ). ✗ 静かければ静かほど → ✓ 静かなら静かなほど (な-adjectives use なら, and な is needed before ほど).
- Using the wrong form for the second verb. ✗ 食べれば食べたほど / ✗ 食べれば食べてほど → ✓ 食べれば食べるほど. The verb before ほど is in the dictionary form, even when the sentence is about the past.
- Ending the sentence with a single action that has no degree. ✗ この本は読めば読むほど、買いました → ✓ この本は読めば読むほど、好きになりました. The second half should be something that can grow or change little by little.
How it's different from similar grammar
2
- 〜ば (if)
- 〜ば alone gives one condition and one result: 薬を飲めば、治ります (If you take the medicine, you will get better). 〜ば〜ほど repeats the word and talks about degree: the result grows as the first part grows. 薬は飲めば飲むほどいいというものではない means 'it is not true that the more medicine you take, the better'.
- 〜につれて (as ... changes)
- 〜につれて follows a verb or noun of change and says that a second change happens along with it over time: 年を取るにつれて、体が弱くなる (As we get older, our bodies get weaker). It cannot follow an adjective. 〜ば〜ほど can be used with adjectives and with actions you repeat, and the second half can be a simple judgment: 早ければ早いほどいい.
How this shows up on the JLPT
N3 grammar questions often leave a blank in the middle of the pattern, so you must pick the correct ば-form (考えれば, 安ければ, 便利なら) or the correct form before ほど. In sentence-ordering questions, keep the two copies of the word next to each other: 〜ば + same word + ほど. Also learn the short version without ば (若い人ほど, 高いほど), which appears in reading passages.
Quick check (3 questions)
Choose the form that fits the blank: この町は、__歩くほど、おもしろい店が見つかる。
このまちは、__あるくほど、おもしろいみせがみつかる。
Which sentence is correct?
A: 「レポートはいつまでに出せばいいですか。」 B: 「早ければ早いほどいいです。」 What does B mean?
レポートはいつまでにだせばいいですか。はやければはやいほどいいです。
