〜ほど〜はない/〜くらい〜はない
ほど〜はない/くらい〜はない
Nothing is as ... as / there is no ... like
This pattern says that A is number one: 'there is nothing as ... as A'. The sentence ends in a negative, but the meaning about A is strongly positive (or strongly negative, with a word like つらい). It shows the speaker's own feeling or opinion, so it is common when you praise or complain. くらい is a little more casual than ほど.
母の料理ほどおいしいものはありません。
ははのりょうりほどおいしいものはありません。
There is nothing as delicious as my mother's cooking.
Structure
Noun A + ほど・くらい + (adjective etc.) + noun B + は + ない / いない. Verb (dictionary form) + ほど・くらい, or verb (dictionary form) + こと + ほど・くらい, is also used: 寝るほど / 寝ることほど. Noun B is a general word such as もの, こと, 人, ところ, or the group that A belongs to (花, 店). Use いない when B is a person or an animal.

Common mistakes
3
- Reading the sentence as something negative about A because it ends in ない. この店のパンほどおいしいパンはない does not mean that this shop's bread is bad. It means that this shop's bread is the best.
- Using ない / ありません for people in everyday speech. 先生ほどやさしい人はありません sounds strange in conversation → ✓ 先生ほどやさしい人はいません. For people and animals, いない / いません is the natural choice (人はない is seen mostly in writing); for things and events use ない / ありません.
- Leaving out noun B. ✗ 旅行ほど楽しいはない → ✓ 旅行ほど楽しいことはない. は cannot follow an adjective directly, so you need a noun such as こと, もの or 人 before は.
How it's different from similar grammar
2
- 〜ほど〜ない (not as ... as)
- AはBほど〜ない compares two things and says that A is lower than B: バスは電車ほど速くない (The bus is not as fast as the train). In 〜ほど〜はない, the negative is not about A. It says that nothing else reaches A's level, so A is at the top: 電車ほど便利な乗り物はない (No vehicle is as convenient as the train).
- 〜が一番〜 (the most)
- Both patterns put A at the top. 一番 is neutral and is the normal choice for facts that can be measured: 日本で一番高い山は富士山です. 〜ほど〜はない is more emotional and shows the speaker's personal feeling, so it fits opinions: 富士山ほどきれいな山はないと思う.
How this shows up on the JLPT
In N3 grammar questions, the blank is usually ほど / くらい itself or the ending はない / はいない. In sentence-ordering questions, keep the order A + ほど + adjective + noun + は + ない; the ★ often falls on the adjective or the noun. In reading passages, do not be fooled by the negative ending: the writer is saying that A is the best (or the worst) in his or her opinion.
