一番 means 'number one' and makes the superlative: 一番好きです is 'I like it the most'. Use it when you choose from three or more things or from a whole group. The group is marked with で ('among', 'in'), and the thing that comes first is marked with が. In questions, choose the question word by what you are asking about: 何 for things, だれ for people, どこ for places, いつ for times, and どれ when you choose from a short list that was just named.
§1Structure
Range + で + Noun + が + 一番 + い-adjective / な-adjective / adverb + verb. The range is a category + の中で (スポーツの中で), a list + の中で (A と B と C の中で), or a place, group or period + で (日本で, クラスで, 1年で). Question: range + で + 何 / どれ / だれ / どこ / いつ + が一番〜か. 一番 + adjective can also come before a noun: 日本で一番高い山.

§3Common mistakes
- Marking the range with に: ✗ スポーツの中にサッカーが一番好きです / ✗ クラスに田中さんが一番背が高いです. The range of comparison takes で: ○ スポーツの中でサッカーが一番好きです / ○ クラスで田中さんが一番背が高いです.
- Using は after the question word, or in the answer: ✗ 何は一番好きですか → ○ 何が一番好きですか. In this pattern the question word is followed by が, and the answer to this question keeps が too: ○ サッカーが一番好きです.
- Mixing up the two-item and the three-or-more patterns: ✗ 肉と魚と野菜の中でどちらが一番好きですか → ○ 肉と魚と野菜の中でどれが一番好きですか. どちら is for two things (肉と魚とどちらが好きですか). For three or more, use どれ, 何, だれ, どこ or いつ with 一番.
§4How it's different from similar grammar
- 〜と〜とどちらが〜か / 〜のほうが〜 (comparing two)
- Two things: りんごとみかんとどちらが好きですか。— りんごのほうが好きです。 (Which do you like better, apples or oranges? — I like apples better.) Three or more, or a whole category: 果物の中で何が一番好きですか。— りんごが一番好きです。 (Which fruit do you like the most? — I like apples the most.) The answer to a 一番 question does not use のほうが.
- 〜は〜より〜 (more ... than)
- より compares one thing with one other thing: 8月は7月より暑いです (August is hotter than July). 一番 puts one thing at the top of a whole range: 1年で8月が一番暑いです (August is the hottest month of the year). The standard with より takes no で, and the range with 一番 takes で.
§5How this shows up on the JLPT
N5 grammar questions test three points: the particle after the range (で, not に), the particle after the question word (が, not は), and the question word itself. Read the answer line to decide the question word: a person → だれ, a place → どこ, a time → いつ, a thing → 何 or どれ. In sentence-building questions, a common order is range の中で → noun が → 一番 → adjective. In listening and reading, 一番 marks the final choice, so the noun right before が一番 is usually the answer to 'which one?'.
§6Quick check (3 questions)
1. Choose the particle that fits the blank: 果物の中__りんごが一番好きです。
くだもののなか__りんごがいちばんすきです。
2. Choose the word that fits the blank: 「日本料理の中で__が一番好きですか。」「てんぷらが一番好きです。」
「にほんりょうりのなかで__がいちばんすきですか。」「てんぷらがいちばんすきです。」
