疑問詞(何・だれ・どこ・いつ・いくら・いくつ)

なに・だれ・どこ・いつ・いくら・いくつ

Basic question words: what, who, where, when, how much, how many

← All N5 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

Question words ask for a piece of information, so the answer is the information itself, not はい or いいえ. Japanese does not move the question word to the front of the sentence. It stays where the answer would be: これは本です → これは何ですか. The answer normally uses the same particle as the question: だれが来ましたか — 田中さんが来ました.

§1Structure

Put the question word in the place where the answer will go, keep the particle, and end the polite sentence with か: 何を食べますか, だれが来ましたか, どこへ行きますか, 〜はいくらですか. 何 = what (read なん before です, の and counters such as 何時 / 何人; read なに before を, が and in most other places). だれ = who (polite: どなた). どこ = where. いつ = when (normally without に). いくら = how much (price). いくつ = how many (things counted with 〜つ); it is also used to ask a person's age. A question word that is the subject takes が, not は.

§2Examples

§3Common mistakes

  • Putting は after a question word. ✗ だれは来ましたか → ✓ だれが来ましたか. は marks something already known, but a question word asks about something unknown. When the question word is the subject, use が, and use が in the answer too: 田中さんが来ました.
  • Adding に after いつ. ✗ いつに日本へ来ましたか → ✓ いつ日本へ来ましたか. いつ is normally used without に. Question words with a number-type time do take に: 何時に起きますか, 何月に来ましたか.
  • Mixing up いくら and いくつ. ✗ このかばんはいくつですか (when asking the price) → ✓ このかばんはいくらですか. いくら asks the price. いくつ asks the number of things (りんごをいくつ買いますか) or a person's age (おいくつですか).

§4How it's different from similar grammar

Question word + か (something, someone, somewhere)
A plain question word asks for information: 何を食べますか (What will you eat?) — パンを食べます. With か added, 何か means 'something', and the sentence becomes a yes-no question: 何か食べますか (Will you eat something?) — はい、食べます. Check whether the answer should be the information or はい / いいえ.
どれ / どの / どちら (which)
何 is an open question: 何を飲みますか (What will you drink?). どれ asks you to choose from a limited group that both people can see or know: (looking at the menu) どれを飲みますか (Which one will you drink?). With only two things, どちら is used: コーヒーと紅茶と、どちらを飲みますか.

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

In N5 grammar Part 1, you often choose the question word by looking at the answer: 〜円です → いくら, a place → どこ, a person → だれ, a time or date → いつ, a number of things → いくつ. Also check the particle after the blank: __が来ましたか needs だれ, and __で食べますか can take どこ. In Part 2 (sentence building with ★), the question word stays inside the sentence and か is the last piece. In the kanji-reading section, remember 何ですか (なん) and 何を (なに).

§6Quick check (3 questions)

  • 1. Choose the word that fits the blank. A: このシャツは__ですか。 B: 2000円です。

    このシャツは__ですか。 にせんえんです。

  • 2. Which sentence correctly asks 'Who is in the classroom?'

  • 3. Which answer fits this question? 「リンさんの妹さんはいくつですか。」

    リンさんのいもうとさんはいくつですか。
