JLPT N5

疑問詞+も〜ない(何も・だれも・どこ(へ)も)

なにも・だれも・どこも

nothing / nobody / nowhere (not ... anything)

← All N5 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

A question word + も with a negative verb means 'not any' or 'none at all': 何も食べません (I don't eat anything), だれも来ませんでした (Nobody came), どこへも行きません (I'm not going anywhere). The word with も does not make the sentence negative by itself, so the verb must be in the negative form. English often uses one negative word ('nothing', 'nobody'), but Japanese needs も and a negative verb together.

§1Structure

何も/だれも/どこ(へ)も + negative verb (〜ません, 〜ませんでした, 〜ない). The particles が and を are not used: 何も食べません, だれもいません. Other particles stay and come before も: だれにも, だれとも, どこへも/どこにも, どこからも.

§2Examples

  • 今朝は何も食べませんでした。

    けさはなにもたべませんでした。

I didn't eat anything this morning.

  • 教室にだれもいません。

    きょうしつにだれもいません。

There is nobody in the classroom.

  • 日曜日はどこへも行きませんでした。

    にちようびはどこへもいきませんでした。

I didn't go anywhere on Sunday.

  • 「箱の中に何かありますか。」「いいえ、何もありません。」

    「はこのなかになにかありますか。」「いいえ、なにもありません。」

"Is there anything in the box?" "No, there is nothing."

  • 昨日はだれにも会いませんでした。

    きのうはだれにもあいませんでした。

    I didn't meet anyone yesterday.

  • このことはだれにも話さないでください。

    このことはだれにもはなさないでください。

Please don't tell anyone about this.

  • お金がないから、今日は何も買わない。

    おかねがないから、きょうはなにもかわない。

I have no money, so I won't buy anything today.

§3Common mistakes

  • Using a positive verb because English has only one negative word: ×何も食べました for 'I ate nothing', ×だれも来ました for 'Nobody came'. In this pattern the verb must be negative: 何も食べませんでした, だれも来ませんでした.
  • Keeping を or が, or putting another particle after も: ×何をも食べません, ×だれがもいません, ×だれもに会いませんでした. を and が are dropped (何も, だれも), and particles such as に, へ and と come before も: だれにも会いませんでした, どこへも行きません, だれとも話しません.
  • Using 何か for 'anything' in a negative sentence: ×何か食べませんでした for 'I didn't eat anything'. 'Anything' in a negative sentence is 何も: 何も食べませんでした. 何か is for 'something', or for 'anything' in a question: 何か食べましたか.

§4How it's different from similar grammar

question word + か (something / someone / somewhere)
何か, だれか and どこか mean 'something', 'someone' and 'somewhere', and they are used in positive sentences and in questions: 何か食べましたか (Did you eat anything?). The answer 'yes' keeps the positive verb: はい、食べました. The answer 'no' changes か to も and makes the verb negative: いいえ、何も食べませんでした. So か and も often appear as a pair in one short dialogue.
question word + でも (anything / anyone / anywhere)
Question word + でも means 'any ... is fine' and is used in positive sentences: 何でも食べます (I eat anything), だれでもわかります (Anyone can understand). Question word + も at this level is used with a negative verb and means 'none': 何も食べません (I don't eat anything). Both are 'anything' in English, so look at the verb: positive goes with でも, negative goes with も.

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

In N5 Mondai 1, the choices are often 何か, 何も, 何を and 何が. Look at the end of the sentence first: if the verb is negative (〜ません, 〜ませんでした) and the sentence is not a question, the answer is the one with も. Dialogues are also common: A asks with 何か/だれか/どこか, and B's answer after いいえ needs 何も/だれも/どこも. In Mondai 2 (sentence ordering), remember the order 'question word + particle + も', as in だれ・に・も.

§6Quick check (3 questions)

  • 1. Choose the word that fits the blank: 昨日は忙しかったですから、昼は__食べませんでした。

    きのうはいそがしかったですから、ひるは__たべませんでした。

  • 2. Which sentence correctly says 'I didn't meet anyone on Sunday'?

  • 3. Choose the best answer for B. A:夏休みにどこかへ行きましたか。 B:いいえ、___。

    A:なつやすみにどこかへいきましたか。 B:いいえ、___。
