JLPT N5

〜も

Also / too (and 'not ... either')

← All N5 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

も means 'also' or 'too'. It shows that what was true for one thing is true for another thing as well. も comes right after the word that is 'added', not at the end of the sentence like English 'too'. In a negative sentence it means 'not ... either'.

§1Structure

Noun + も. も takes the place of は, が and を (わたしは → わたしも, パンを → パンも). With other particles such as に, で, と and から, も is added after the particle: にも, でも, とも, からも. AもBも means 'both A and B' (with a negative: 'neither A nor B').

§2Examples

  • わたしは会社員です。リンさんも会社員です。

    わたしはかいしゃいんです。リンさんもかいしゃいんです。

I am an office worker. Linh is an office worker too.

  • 毎朝、コーヒーを飲みます。紅茶も飲みます。

    まいあさ、コーヒーをのみます。こうちゃものみます。

I drink coffee every morning. I drink tea too.

  • 田中さんは肉を食べません。魚も食べません。

    たなかさんはにくをたべません。さかなもたべません。

Mr. Tanaka doesn't eat meat. He doesn't eat fish either.

  • あしたも仕事ですか。

    あしたもしごとですか。

Do you have work tomorrow too?

  • きのうは学校で勉強しました。うちでも勉強しました。

    きのうはがっこうでべんきょうしました。うちでもべんきょうしました。

Yesterday I studied at school. I studied at home too.

  • 母に電話をかけました。姉にもかけました。

    ははにでんわをかけました。あねにもかけました。

I called my mother. I called my older sister too.

  • この店はパンもケーキもおいしいです。

    このみせはパンもケーキもおいしいです。

At this shop, both the bread and the cake are delicious.

  • わたしもその映画を見たよ。

    わたしもそのえいがをみたよ。

I saw that movie too. (casual)

§3Common mistakes

  • Keeping は, が or を together with も. ✗ わたしはも学生です / ✗ パンをも食べます → ✓ わたしも学生です / ✓ パンも食べます. In everyday Japanese, も replaces these three particles. Other particles stay, and も comes after them: ✗ 図書館もで勉強します → ✓ 図書館でも勉強します.
  • Putting も after the wrong word. わたしも紅茶を飲みます means 'I, too, drink tea' (someone else drinks tea, and so do I). わたしは紅茶も飲みます means 'I drink tea too' (I drink something else, and tea as well). Put も right after the word that is added.
  • Keeping も when you answer 'no'. 「リンさんも学生ですか。」 ✗「いいえ、リンさんも学生じゃありません。」 → ✓「いいえ、リンさんは学生じゃありません。」 も in a negative sentence means 'not ... either', so use it only when the first person is not a student either.

§4How it's different from similar grammar

〜は (topic marker)
は simply sets the topic: リンさんは学生です (Linh is a student). も says that the same thing is true again: 田中さんは学生です。リンさんも学生です (Mr. Tanaka is a student. Linh is a student too). If the second thing is different, go back to は: 田中さんは学生です。リンさんは先生です (Mr. Tanaka is a student. Linh is a teacher).
Noun + と + noun (and)
と simply lists things: パンと牛乳を買いました (I bought bread and milk). AもBも stresses that the same is true for both: パンも牛乳も買いました (I bought both bread and milk). With a negative verb, AもBも means 'neither': パンも牛乳も買いませんでした (I bought neither bread nor milk).

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

In N5 grammar Part 1 (choose the particle), look at the sentence before the blank. If it says the same thing about another person or thing, the answer is usually も, not は or を. This also works with negatives (〜ません。〜も〜ません). In Part 2 (sentence building with ★), remember the order にも / でも / からも: も comes after に, で and から, not before them. In reading, も tells you that something is the same as in the sentence before.

§6Quick check (3 questions)

  • 1. Choose the particle that fits the blank: わたしはベトナム人です。リンさん__ベトナム人です。

    わたしはベトナムじんです。リンさん__ベトナムじんです。

  • 2. Which sentence correctly says 'I study at the library too (not only at home)'?

  • 3. What does わたしはコーヒーも飲みます mean?

    わたしはコーヒーものみます
