と joins two or more nouns and means 'and'. It tells the listener that the list is complete: パンと卵を食べました means you ate bread and eggs, and that is all you are listing. If you want to give only some examples, use や instead.
§1Structure
Noun + と + noun. For three or more items, put と between each pair: noun + と + noun + と + noun. The whole group then takes one particle or です: パンと卵を食べます, 休みは土曜日と日曜日です. と connects nouns only. It does not connect verbs, adjectives or sentences.
§2Examples
毎朝、パンと卵を食べます。
まいあさ、パンとたまごをたべます。
I eat bread and eggs every morning.
机の上に本とペンがあります。
つくえのうえにほんとペンがあります。
There are a book and a pen on the desk.
休みは土曜日と日曜日です。
やすみはどようびとにちようびです。
My days off are Saturday and Sunday.
きのう、スーパーで肉と野菜と果物を買いました。
きのう、スーパーでにくとやさいとくだものをかいました。
Yesterday I bought meat, vegetables and fruit at the supermarket.
田中さんとリンさんは学生ですか。
たなかさんとリンさんはがくせいですか。
Are Mr. Tanaka and Ms. Linh students?
わたしは肉と魚を食べません。
わたしはにくとさかなをたべません。
I don't eat meat or fish.
リンさんは日本語と英語がわかります。
リンさんはにほんごとえいごがわかります。
Ms. Linh understands Japanese and English.
わたしは兄と姉がいる。
わたしはあにとあねがいる。
I have an older brother and an older sister. (plain style)
§3Common mistakes
- Using と to join adjectives or verbs, because English 'and' and Vietnamese 'và' can join anything: この店は安いとおいしいです and 朝ごはんを食べると学校へ行きます do not mean 'cheap and tasty' or 'I eat and go'. Use the て-form: この店は安くておいしいです, 朝ごはんを食べて、学校へ行きます.
- Starting a new sentence with と to mean 'And ...': 朝、パンを食べました。と、コーヒーを飲みました is wrong. To join two sentences, use そして or それから: 朝、パンを食べました。そして、コーヒーを飲みました.
- Using と when you are only giving examples. かばんの中に本とノートがあります sounds like a book and a notebook are all that is in the bag. If there are other things too, や is the better choice: かばんの中に本やノートがあります.
§4How it's different from similar grammar
- 〜や〜(など) (and ... among other things)
- と lists everything: 冷蔵庫に牛乳と卵があります (There are milk and eggs in the fridge; these are the items). や gives some examples and suggests there are more: 冷蔵庫に牛乳や卵があります (There are milk, eggs and other things in the fridge). など can follow the list with や, but it is not normally used with と.
- person + と (together with)
- The と of listing stands between two nouns, and the pair works as one unit: 田中さんとリンさんが来ました (Mr. Tanaka and Ms. Linh came). The と of 'with' follows a person and is followed by the rest of the sentence, not by another noun in the list: リンさんは田中さんと来ました (Ms. Linh came with Mr. Tanaka).
§5How this shows up on the JLPT
N5 particle questions put a blank between two nouns (パン__牛乳を買いました) and offer と, も, に, を and so on; only と or や can join two nouns there. In sentence-ordering questions, remember that 'noun と noun' is one block and the particle (を, が, は) comes after the second noun. In listening, と means the speaker named every item, which can matter when the question asks what someone bought or ordered.
§6Quick check (3 questions)
1. Choose the particle that fits the blank: 朝ごはんはいつもパン__コーヒーです。
あさごはんはいつもパン__コーヒーです。
2. Which sentence uses と correctly?
3. A says: かばんの中に財布とかぎがあります。 What does と tell you?
かばんのなかにさいふとかぎがあります。
