Between two nouns, か means 'or': one of the two, not both. 土曜日か日曜日 is 'Saturday or Sunday'. To ask someone to choose, Japanese repeats the whole question: これは「り」ですか、「い」ですか (Is this り or い?). The listener answers with the correct half: 「り」です.
§1Structure
1) Noun + か + Noun (+ particle): パンかごはんを食べます. The particle (を, に, で, へ ...) comes once, after the last noun. 2) Choice question: two questions in a row, Sentence か、Sentence か: コーヒーですか、紅茶ですか/電車で来ましたか、バスで来ましたか. The answer to a choice question is one of the two, without はい or いいえ.

§3Common mistakes
- Answering a choice question with はい or いいえ: 「コーヒーですか、紅茶ですか。」×「はい、紅茶です。」 A choice question is not a yes/no question. Just say which one: 紅茶です.
- Using と when you mean 'or': パンとごはんを食べます means that you eat both bread and rice. If you eat only one of them, use か: パンかごはんを食べます.
- Repeating the particle before か: ×パンをかごはんを食べます, ×土曜日にか日曜日に行きます. か joins the two nouns directly, and the particle comes once at the end: パンかごはんを食べます, 土曜日か日曜日に行きます.
§4How it's different from similar grammar
- か at the end of a sentence (question)
- One か at the end of a sentence makes a yes/no question: これはお茶ですか。…はい、お茶です (Is this tea? Yes, it is). Two questions in a row make a choice question: これはお茶ですか、水ですか。…お茶です (Is this tea or water? It's tea). か between two nouns inside a sentence is not a question at all: お茶か水を飲みます (I drink tea or water).
- と (A and B) / や (A, B and so on)
- All three join nouns, but the meaning is different. A と B means both A and B: りんごとバナナを買います (I buy apples and bananas). A や B means A, B and other things like them: りんごやバナナを買います (I buy apples, bananas and so on). A か B means only one of them: りんごかバナナを買います (I buy apples or bananas).
§5How this shows up on the JLPT
In N5 Mondai 1, か between nouns is tested against と, や and も. Read the rest of the sentence to see whether the speaker means both things (と), examples (や) or only one of them (か). Choice questions appear in short dialogues: if B's answer has no はい or いいえ and simply repeats one of two words, A's line is 〜ですか、〜ですか. In listening, the speaker often offers two choices with か (月曜日か火曜日), and the question asks which one was finally chosen, so keep listening until the end.
§6Quick check (3 questions)
1. Choose the best answer for B. A:山田さんは先生ですか、学生ですか。 B:___。
A:やまださんはせんせいですか、がくせいですか。 B:___。
2. Choose the particle so that the sentence means 'I will go by bus or by subway (one of them)': 明日はバス__地下鉄で行きます。
あしたはバス__ちかてつでいきます。
3. Which one is a question that asks the listener to choose between two things?
