JLPT N5

疑問詞+か(何か・だれか・どこか・いつか)

なにか・だれか・どこか

something / someone / somewhere / someday

← All N5 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

When か is added to a question word, the word stops being a question and means 'some-': 何 (what) becomes 何か (something), だれ (who) becomes だれか (someone). You use it when you do not know, or do not need to say, exactly what, who, where or when. In a question it means 'anything / anyone / anywhere', and the question is a yes/no question: 何か食べましたか (Did you eat anything?) is answered with はい or いいえ.

§1Structure

何か (something), だれか (someone), どこか (somewhere), いつか (someday). After 何か and だれか, the particles が and を are usually left out (何か食べます, だれか来ました), but they can be kept (だれかが来ました). Other particles come after か: どこかへ, どこかで, だれかに, だれかと. A describing word comes after it: 何か + 冷たい + もの, どこか + 静かな + ところ.

§2Examples

  • のどがかわきましたね。何か飲みませんか。

    のどがかわきましたね。なにかのみませんか。

I'm thirsty, aren't you? Shall we drink something?

  • 「部屋にだれかいますか。」「いいえ、だれもいません。」

    「へやにだれかいますか。」「いいえ、だれもいません。」

"Is there anyone in the room?" "No, there is nobody."

  • 週末はどこかへ行きたいです。

    しゅうまつはどこかへいきたいです。

I want to go somewhere on the weekend.

  • いつか日本で働きたいです。

    いつかにほんではたらきたいです。

I want to work in Japan someday.

  • 何か質問がありますか。

    なにかしつもんがありますか。

    Do you have any questions?

  • かばんの中に何か入っています。

    かばんのなかになにかはいっています。

There is something in the bag.

  • 昨日、駅でだれかがわたしの名前を呼びました。

    きのう、えきでだれかがわたしのなまえをよびました。

Yesterday someone called my name at the station.

  • おなかがすいた。何か食べたい。

    おなかがすいた。なにかたべたい。

I'm hungry. I want to eat something.

§3Common mistakes

  • Mixing up 何か〜か and 何を〜か. 何か食べましたか asks 'Did you eat anything?', so the answer starts with はい or いいえ: はい、食べました. 何を食べましたか asks 'What did you eat?', so the answer names the food without はい: パンを食べました. The same is true for だれか/だれが and どこかへ/どこへ.
  • Putting the particle before か: ×どこへか行きたいです, ×だれにか聞きます. With か, the particle comes after it: どこかへ行きたいです, だれかに聞きます. (With も it is the opposite: どこへも, だれにも.)
  • Keeping 何か in a negative answer: ×いいえ、何か食べませんでした. When the answer is 'no', change か to も and use a negative verb: いいえ、何も食べませんでした.

§4How it's different from similar grammar

question word + も + negative (nothing / nobody / nowhere)
Question word + か means that at least one thing or person exists, or may exist: 教室にだれかいます (There is someone in the classroom). Question word + も with a negative verb means that there is none: 教室にだれもいません (There is nobody in the classroom). The particle order is also different: か comes before the particle (だれかに), but も comes after it (だれにも).
question word + でも (anything / anyone / anywhere at all)
何か means one thing that is not named: 何か食べたいです (I want to eat something). 何でも means that every choice is fine: 何でも食べます (I eat anything). If a friend asks 何が食べたいですか and you have no preference, you answer 何でもいいです (Anything is fine), not 何かいいです.

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

In N5 Mondai 1, 何か is tested against 何を, 何が and 何も. The answer line is the best hint: if B answers with はい or いいえ, A's question has 何か/だれか/どこか; if B answers with the thing itself (パンを食べました), A's question has 何を. In Mondai 2 (sentence ordering), remember the order 'question word + か + particle' (どこ・か・へ), and that a describing word follows 何か (何か・冷たい・もの). In listening, 何か飲みませんか is an invitation, not a request for information.

§6Quick check (3 questions)

  • 1. Choose the word that fits the blank. A:日曜日に___行きましたか。 B:はい、海へ行きました。

    A:にちようびに___いきましたか。 B:はい、うみへいきました。

  • 2. Which sentence correctly says 'I want to eat something sweet'?

  • 3. What does this sentence mean? いつか日本へ行きたいです。

    いつかにほんへいきたいです。
