JLPT N4

疑問詞+〜か(埋め込み疑問)

Embedded question: (I don't know) what / when / where ...

← All N4 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

This pattern puts a question with a question word inside a bigger sentence, like 'I don't know what time it arrives' or 'Do you know where the meeting is?'. The inner question changes to the plain form and keeps か, and then the main verb follows. If the inner question has no question word (a yes / no question), use 〜かどうか instead.

§1Structure

Question word (何, だれ, どこ, いつ, どう, どうして, いくら, どの〜 ...) + plain form + か + main verb (分かる, 知っている, 教える, 覚えている, 忘れる, 決める, 聞く, 調べる, 考える ...). Verb plain form + か (着くか, 来なかったか). い-adjective plain form + か (いいか, 高かったか). な-adjective / noun + か, normally without だ (便利か, だれか; past: いくらだったか). The particle を or が after か is usually dropped: 何時に着くか(を)知っていますか.

§2Examples

  • 飛行機が何時に着くか分かりません。

    ひこうきがなんじにつくかわかりません。

I don't know what time the plane arrives.

  • 会議がどこであるか知っていますか。

    かいぎがどこであるかしっていますか。

Do you know where the meeting will be?

  • 旅行にだれが行くか、まだ決めていません。

    りょこうにだれがいくか、まだきめていません。

We haven't decided yet who will go on the trip.

  • このかばんがいくらだったか覚えていますか。

    このかばんがいくらだったかおぼえていますか。

Do you remember how much this bag was?

  • あの人がだれか知らない。

    あのひとがだれかしらない。

I don't know who that person is.

  • どの辞書がいちばん便利か、先生に聞いてみます。

    どのじしょがいちばんべんりか、せんせいにきいてみます。

I will ask the teacher which dictionary is the most convenient.

  • どうしてリンさんが来なかったか、だれも知りませんでした。

    どうしてリンさんがこなかったか、だれもしりませんでした。

Nobody knew why Linh didn't come.

  • 誕生日に何をあげたらいいか、考えています。

    たんじょうびになにをあげたらいいか、かんがえています。

I am thinking about what I should give for the birthday.

§3Common mistakes

  • Keeping the polite form inside the embedded question. ✕ 何時に着きますか分かりません ✕ どこですか知っていますか → ○ 何時に着くか分かりません ○ どこか知っていますか. The inner question is in the plain form; politeness is shown by the main verb at the end.
  • Using かどうか together with a question word. ✕ 何時に着くかどうか分かりません → ○ 何時に着くか分かりません. かどうか is for yes / no questions that have no question word: 5時に着くかどうか分かりません (I don't know whether it arrives at five or not).
  • Leaving out か, or using と instead. ✕ 何時に着く分かりません ✕ 何時に着くと分かりません → ○ 何時に着くか分かりません. か is the mark that shows where the inner question ends, so it cannot be dropped.

§4How it's different from similar grammar

〜かどうか (whether or not)
Choose by looking for a question word. With a question word, use only か: パーティーにだれが来るか教えてください (Please tell me who is coming to the party). Without a question word, the inner question is a yes / no question, so use かどうか: 田中さんがパーティーに来るかどうか教えてください (Please tell me whether Mr. Tanaka is coming to the party or not).
Question word + か (something, someone, somewhere)
何か, だれか and どこか are single words that mean 'something', 'someone' and 'somewhere'. か comes right after the question word, and the word is used like a noun: 冷蔵庫に何かありますか (Is there something in the fridge?). In an embedded question, か comes at the end of a whole clause, and a verb like 分かる or 知っている follows: 冷蔵庫に何があるか分かりません (I don't know what is in the fridge).

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

Grammar-form questions test three points: the plain form before か (着くか, not 着きますか), the choice between か and かどうか (question word → か), and the main verbs that follow (分かりません, 知っていますか, 教えてください, 覚えていません). This pattern is also very common in sentence-ordering questions: build the inner question first (question word → ... → plain form + か) and then put the main verb last. In listening, 〜か教えてください and 〜か知っていますか are polite ways of asking, so answer the inner question, not just 'yes' or 'no'.

§6Quick check (3 questions)

  • 1. Choose the best form for the blank: パーティーに何人__か、まだ分かりません。

    パーティーになんにん__か、まだわかりません。

  • 2. Choose the best phrase for the blank: リンさんがいつ国へ__、知っていますか。

    リンさんがいつくにへ__、しっていますか。

  • 3. Which sentence correctly says 'Do you know what that building is?'
