Adding か to the end of a polite sentence turns it into a question. The voice usually rises on か. In Japanese writing, a question with か normally ends with 「。」, not with a question mark. In casual speech between friends, か is usually dropped and only the voice rises (行く?).
§1Structure
Polite sentence (〜です / 〜ます / 〜ません / 〜ました / 〜でした ...) + か. The word order does not change. In a question with a question word (何, だれ, どこ, いつ ...), the question word stays in the place where the answer will go, and か still comes at the end.
§2Examples
田中さんは学生ですか。
たなかさんはがくせいですか。
Is Mr. Tanaka a student?
あした、会社へ行きますか。
あした、かいしゃへいきますか。
Are you going to the office tomorrow?
これは何ですか。
これはなんですか。
What is this?
きのう、どこへ行きましたか。
きのう、どこへいきましたか。
Where did you go yesterday?
このバスは駅へ行きませんか。
このバスはえきへいきませんか。
Doesn't this bus go to the station?
日本の冬は寒いですか。
にほんのふゆはさむいですか。
Is winter in Japan cold?
そうですか。わかりました。
そうですか。わかりました。
I see. I understand. (said with a falling voice; not a real question)
あした、学校へ行く?
あした、がっこうへいく?
Are you going to school tomorrow? (casual: か is dropped and the voice rises)
§3Common mistakes
- Answering a question-word question with はい or いいえ. 「きのう何を食べましたか。」 ✗「はい、カレーを食べました。」 → ✓「カレーを食べました。」 はい / いいえ are only for yes-no questions.
- Adding か after plain だ. ✗ あしたは休みだか → ✓ あしたは休みですか (polite) or あしたは休み? (casual). 〜だか is not used to ask a question in standard Japanese.
- Moving the question word to the front and marking it with は, as in English 'What is this?'. ✗ 何はこれですか → ✓ これは何ですか. The word order stays the same as in the answer (これは本です), and a question word normally does not take the topic marker は.
§4How it's different from similar grammar
- 〜ませんか (invitation)
- 〜ますか simply asks for information: あした映画を見ますか (Will you watch a movie tomorrow?). 〜ませんか is often an invitation, not a real negative question: いっしょに映画を見ませんか (Would you like to watch a movie together?). Words like いっしょに show that it is an invitation. Without such a hint, 〜ませんか can also be a plain negative question, as in このバスは駅へ行きませんか.
- 〜か〜 (choice: A or B)
- At the end of a sentence, か makes a question: コーヒーを飲みますか (Do you drink coffee?). Between two nouns, か means 'or': コーヒーか紅茶を飲みます (I drink coffee or tea). You can also put two questions side by side to ask someone to choose: コーヒーですか、紅茶ですか (Coffee, or tea?).
§5How this shows up on the JLPT
In N5 grammar Part 1, short dialogues test whether you can match a question and its answer: a yes-no question is answered with はい / いいえ, and a question-word question is answered with the information itself. In Part 2 (sentence building with ★), か is almost always the last piece, right after です or ます. In the listening section, listen to the voice: a rising か is a question, but そうですか with a falling voice only means 'I see'.
§6Quick check (3 questions)
1. Choose the particle that fits the blank. A: これはあなたのかばんです__。 B: はい、そうです。
これはあなたのかばんです__。 はい、そうです。
2. Which sentence correctly asks 'What did you eat yesterday?'
3. A: あしたは休みです。 B: そうですか。 (B's voice falls at the end.) What does B mean?
あしたはやすみです。 そうですか。
