JLPT N5

〜じゃありません/〜ではありません

じゃありません/ではありません

is not / am not / are not (polite negative of です)

← All N5 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

This is the polite negative form of です. It is used after nouns and な-adjectives to say that something is not so. じゃありません is common in speaking. ではありません sounds more formal and is common in writing. Verbs and い-adjectives make their negative forms in a different way.

§1Structure

Noun + じゃありません / ではありません. な-adjective (without な) + じゃありません / ではありません. The は in では is read 'wa'. In conversation you also hear Noun / な-adjective + じゃないです. Plain form: 〜じゃない / 〜ではない. Past: 〜じゃありませんでした.

§2Examples

  • わたしは学生じゃありません。

    わたしはがくせいじゃありません。

    I am not a student.

  • これはわたしの傘ではありません。

    これはわたしのかさではありません。

    This is not my umbrella.

  • 「これは砂糖ですか。」「いいえ、砂糖じゃありません。塩です。」

    「これはさとうですか。」「いいえ、さとうじゃありません。しおです。」

"Is this sugar?" "No, it isn't sugar. It's salt."

  • この町はにぎやかじゃありません。

    このまちはにぎやかじゃありません。

    This town is not lively.

  • きのうは雨じゃありませんでした。

    きのうはあめじゃありませんでした。

    It was not rainy yesterday.

  • わたしは先生じゃないです。

    わたしはせんせいじゃないです。

I'm not a teacher. (conversational polite form)

  • あしたは日曜日じゃない。

    あしたはにちようびじゃない。

    Tomorrow isn't Sunday. (plain style)

§3Common mistakes

  • Using じゃありません to make an い-adjective negative. ✗ このかばんは高いじゃありません → ✓ このかばんは高くないです (or 高くありません). For an い-adjective, change い to くない.
  • Treating きれい, ゆうめい or きらい as い-adjectives because they end in い. ✗ きれくないです → ✓ きれいじゃありません. These words are な-adjectives, so they take じゃありません.
  • Using it with verbs. ✗ あした行きますじゃありません → ✓ あした行きません. The polite negative of a verb is 〜ません.

§4How it's different from similar grammar

じゃありません vs. ではありません
The meaning is the same, and both are polite. じゃ is the short spoken form of では. In everyday conversation people usually say 学生じゃありません or 学生じゃないです. In writing, speeches and formal situations, 学生ではありません is preferred. On the JLPT both can appear, so learn them as one pair.
〜くないです (negative of い-adjectives)
Nouns and な-adjectives take じゃありません: この部屋は静かじゃありません (This room is not quiet). い-adjectives change い to くない: この部屋は広くないです (This room is not big). Look at the kind of word before you choose the negative form.

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

In N5 grammar Part 1, the choices often mix じゃありません, くないです, ません and じゃありませんでした. First check the word before the blank (noun, な-adjective, い-adjective or verb), then check the time word for past or non-past. In short dialogues, the answer after いいえ is usually this form: 「学生ですか。」「いいえ、学生じゃありません。」 In Part 2 (sentence building with ★), じゃ / では must stay right before ありません.

§6Quick check (3 questions)

  • 1. Choose the words that fit the blank: わたしは先生__。会社員です。

    わたしはせんせい__。かいしゃいんです。

  • 2. Which sentence correctly says 'This room is not clean'?

  • 3. When is ではありません usually chosen instead of じゃありません?
