JLPT N5

ます形(〜ます・〜ません・〜ました・〜ませんでした)

ますけい

Polite verb form: 〜ます / 〜ません / 〜ました / 〜ませんでした

← All N5 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

ます makes a verb polite. Use it with people you do not know well, with teachers, at work and in shops. 〜ます is used for habits and for the future (Japanese has no separate future form), 〜ました is used for the past, and 〜ません and 〜ませんでした are the negative forms. With family and close friends, people usually use the plain form (行く, 行かない) instead.

§1Structure

Verb ます-stem + ます (non-past, affirmative) / ません (non-past, negative) / ました (past, affirmative) / ませんでした (past, negative). Making it from the dictionary form — Group I: change the last う-row sound to the い-row and add ます (書く → 書きます, 飲む → 飲みます, 話す → 話します, 待つ → 待ちます, 買う → 買います). Group II: take off る and add ます (食べる → 食べます, 見る → 見ます). Group III: する → します, 来る → 来ます (きます). Add か at the end to make a question.

§2Examples

  • わたしは毎晩11時に寝ます。

    わたしはまいばんじゅういちじにねます。

I go to bed at 11 every night.

  • あした、友だちと映画を見ます。

    あした、ともだちとえいがをみます。

I'm going to see a movie with a friend tomorrow.

  • わたしはお酒を飲みません。

    わたしはおさけをのみません。

    I don't drink alcohol.

  • きのう、スーパーで野菜と肉を買いました。

    きのう、スーパーでやさいとにくをかいました。

Yesterday I bought vegetables and meat at the supermarket.

  • けさ、朝ごはんを食べませんでした。

    けさ、あさごはんをたべませんでした。

I didn't eat breakfast this morning.

  • リンさんは土曜日も働きますか。

    リンさんはどようびもはたらきますか。

Does Lin work on Saturdays too?

  • 週末、何をしましたか。

    しゅうまつ、なにをしましたか。

What did you do on the weekend?

  • あしたは学校へ行かない。

    あしたはがっこうへいかない。

I'm not going to school tomorrow. (plain style, said to a friend; the polite form is 行きません)

§3Common mistakes

  • Making the past negative in the wrong order. The correct form is 行きませんでした; forms such as 行きましたません, 行きませんました or 行きますでした do not exist.
  • Using 〜ます for a past action. In some languages, such as Vietnamese, the verb itself does not change for the past, but Japanese must show the past on the verb: きのう、映画を見ます is wrong; say きのう、映画を見ました.
  • Making the ます-form with the wrong verb group or from the dictionary form: 帰ます, 見ります and 食べるます are wrong. The correct forms are 帰ります (Group I), 見ます and 食べます (Group II).

§4How it's different from similar grammar

〜ています (action in progress)
〜ます shows a habit or a future action, not something happening right now. 毎朝コーヒーを飲みます means 'I drink coffee every morning' (habit). For an action in progress at this moment, use 〜ています: 今、コーヒーを飲んでいます (I am drinking coffee now).
Plain style (行く / 行かない / 行った / 行かなかった)
The meaning is the same; only the politeness is different. あした行きます is polite, and あした行く is what you say to friends and family. The four forms match like this: 行きます = 行く, 行きません = 行かない, 行きました = 行った, 行きませんでした = 行かなかった.

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

In N5 grammar questions where you choose the right form for a blank, look for the time word first: きのう, 先週 and けさ need 〜ました or 〜ませんでした, while あした, 来週 and 毎日 need 〜ます or 〜ません. あまり and ぜんぜん point to a negative form. In sentence-ordering questions, remember that the ます-verb comes at the end of the sentence. In short dialogues, check that the answer matches the question: 行きましたか → はい、行きました / いいえ、行きませんでした.

§6Quick check (3 questions)

  • 1. Choose the form that fits the blank: きのうは忙しかったですから、新聞を__。

    きのうはいそがしかったですから、しんぶんを__。

  • 2. Which sentence correctly says 'I didn't watch TV yesterday'?

  • 3. あした、友だちに会います。 — What does 会います show in this sentence?

    あした、ともだちにあいます。
