Japanese verbs are divided into three groups by the way they change form. You need to know a verb's group to make the て-form, ない-form, dictionary form and た-form correctly. In Group I the sound before ます changes (書きます → 書く, 書かない, 書いて). In Group II you only take off ます or る and add the new ending (食べます → 食べる, 食べない, 食べて). Group III has two irregular verbs, する and 来る, and you simply memorize their forms.
§1Structure
Group I (godan / u-verbs): the sound before ます is in the い-row — 書きます, 飲みます, 話します, 待ちます, 買います, 帰ります. The dictionary form ends in う・く・ぐ・す・つ・ぬ・ぶ・む・る. Group II (ichidan / ru-verbs): the sound before ます is usually in the え-row — 食べます, 寝ます, 教えます — plus some い-row verbs that you need to remember, such as 見ます, 起きます, 借ります, 着ます, 浴びます, 降ります (おります), できます, います. The dictionary form ends in る. Group III (irregular): します (する), 来ます (くる), and noun + します such as 勉強します.
§2Examples
毎朝、コーヒーを飲みます。
まいあさ、コーヒーをのみます。
I drink coffee every morning. (飲みます → 飲む: Group I)
日曜日は7時に起きます。
にちようびはしちじにおきます。
On Sundays I get up at 7. (起きます → 起きる: Group II, an い-row verb)
週末、図書館で勉強します。
しゅうまつ、としょかんでべんきょうします。
On weekends I study at the library. (勉強します → 勉強する: Group III)
きのうはテレビを見ませんでした。
きのうはテレビをみませんでした。
I didn't watch TV yesterday. (見ます → 見る: Group II)
田中さんは何時に来ますか。
たなかさんはなんじにきますか。
What time is Mr. Tanaka coming? (来ます → 来る: Group III)
先週、友だちに手紙を書きました。
せんしゅう、ともだちにてがみをかきました。
Last week I wrote a letter to a friend. (書きます → 書く: Group I)
今日は早くうちへ帰る。
きょうははやくうちへかえる。
I'm going home early today. (帰る ends in -eru but is Group I: 帰ります)
わたしは朝ごはんを食べない。
わたしはあさごはんをたべない。
I don't eat breakfast. (食べる → 食べない: Group II, just change る to ない)
§3Common mistakes
- Thinking that every verb ending in -iru or -eru is Group II. 帰る, 入る, 走る, 知る and 切る are Group I, so the correct forms are 帰ります and 帰って, not 帰ます or 帰て.
- Treating い-row Group II verbs as Group I because they have an い sound before ます. 借ります, 見ます and 起きます are Group II: the て-forms are 借りて, 見て and 起きて, not 借って, 見って or 起いて.
- Reading 来る the same way in every form. The reading changes: 来ます (きます), 来る (くる), 来ない (こない), 来て (きて). Forms such as きない or くない are wrong.
§4How it's different from similar grammar
- 切る (Group I) vs 着る (Group II)
- Both dictionary forms are read きる, but 切る (to cut) is Group I and 着る (to wear) is Group II. Compare: はさみで紙を切ります (I cut paper with scissors) and 毎日シャツを着ます (I wear a shirt every day). Look at the dictionary form and the ます-form together: if る changes to り (切る → 切ります), the verb is Group I; if る just disappears (着る → 着ます), it is Group II. The same is true for 帰る (帰ります, Group I) and 変える (変えます, Group II).
- Group I / II / III vs godan / ichidan / irregular (different names)
- Textbooks use different names, but the groups are the same: Group I = 五段 (godan) = u-verbs, Group II = 一段 (ichidan) = ru-verbs, Group III = 不規則 (irregular). 'Godan' means five steps: the sound before the ending moves along a row of the kana chart, as in 飲まない, 飲みます, 飲む. 'Ichidan' means one step: the stem never changes, as in 食べない, 食べます, 食べる.
§5How this shows up on the JLPT
The JLPT does not ask you to name a verb's group. It checks the result. In N5 grammar questions where you choose the right form for a blank, you have to pick the correct て-form, ない-form or た-form, and the wrong choices are often forms made with the wrong group, such as 帰て or 起きって. Remember the Group I verbs that look like Group II (帰る, 入る, 走る, 知る, 切る) and the い-row Group II verbs (見る, 起きる, 借りる, 着る, 浴びる, 降りる, できる).
§6Quick check (3 questions)
1. Which of these verbs is a Group II (ichidan) verb?
2. Choose the form that fits the blank: 田中さんは毎日6時にうちへ__。
たなかさんはまいにちろくじにうちへ__。
3. Which is correct for the verb 起きます (to get up)?
おきます
