How to make the て-form

← All N5 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

The て-form is a verb form that connects a verb to what comes next. It has no tense of its own; the end of the sentence shows the tense and the politeness. At N5 you need it for 〜てください (requests), 〜ています (actions in progress and states), 〜て、〜 (actions in order) and 〜てから (after doing). First check which group the verb belongs to, and then apply the sound change for that group.

§1Structure

Group II and III just change ます to て (食べます → 食べて, します → して, 来ます → 来て).

§3Common mistakes

  • Applying the 〜く → いて rule to 行く. 行いて is wrong; 行く is an exception and becomes 行って: 学校へ行って、勉強します.
  • Mixing up Group I and Group II verbs that end in る. Group II verbs only drop る: 見る → 見て, 起きる → 起きて (not 見って, 起きって). Group I verbs that end in る take って: 帰る → 帰って, 入る → 入って (not 帰て, 入て).
  • Forgetting the voiced sound で. Verbs in 〜む・〜ぶ・〜ぬ and 〜ぐ take で, not て: 飲む → 飲んで (not 飲んて), 遊ぶ → 遊んで, 泳ぐ → 泳いで (not 泳いて).

§4How it's different from similar grammar

The た-form (plain past)
The た-form uses exactly the same sound changes; you only change て to た and で to だ: 書いて → 書いた, 飲んで → 飲んだ, 行って → 行った. The meaning is different. The て-form has no tense and connects to something else: 手紙を書いてください (Please write a letter). The た-form is the plain past and can end a sentence: 昨日、手紙を書いた (I wrote a letter yesterday).
〜くて / 〜で (the て-form of adjectives and nouns)
Adjectives and nouns also have a connecting form, but the rules are different from verbs. い-adjectives change い to くて, and な-adjectives and nouns add で: この店は安くて、おいしいです (This shop is cheap and tasty), この町は静かで、きれいです (This town is quiet and pretty). The verb rules on this page (って, んで, いて, いで, して) are only for verbs.

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

The JLPT does not ask you to 'make the て-form' directly, but almost every N5 grammar question with 〜てください, 〜ています, 〜てから or 〜て、〜 has wrong choices made from wrong て-forms, such as 飲んて, 行いて or 見って. You have to pick the correctly formed one quickly. In listening, you must recognize the verb from its て-form: いって can be 行って or 言って, and きて can be 来て or 着て, so use the context. Practice until the change is automatic for the common N5 verbs.

§6Quick check (3 questions)

  • 1. Which is the correct て-form of 行く (いく, to go)?

    いく

  • 2. Choose the form that fits the blank: 毎晩、薬を__から、寝ます。

    まいばん、くすりを__から、ねます。

  • 3. Which line has only correct て-forms of 見る, 帰る and 話す?

    みる・かえる・はなす
