〜てください

Verb て-form + ください (書く → 書いて → 書いてください, 見る → 見て → 見てください, する → して → してください, 来る → 来て → 来てください). To ask someone not to do something, use the ない-form + でください (see 〜ないでください). In casual speech to friends and family, ください is dropped and the て-form is used alone (待って).

• どうぞ、こちらに座ってください。

  どうぞ、こちらにすわってください。

  あしたはくじにきてください。

  Please come at nine o'clock tomorrow.

• ここで写真を撮らないでください。

  ここでしゃしんをとらないでください。

  Please do not take photos here.

• 「どこに荷物を置きますか。」「あそこに置いてください。」

  「どこににもつをおきますか。」「あそこにおいてください。」

  "Where should I put the luggage?" "Please put it over there."

• 医者は「この薬を一日に3回飲んでください」と言いました。

  いしゃは「このくすりをいちにちにさんかいのんでください」といいました。

  The doctor said, "Please take this medicine three times a day."

• ちょっと待って。今行くから。

  ちょっとまって。いまいくから。

  Wait a moment. I'm coming now.

• Putting ください after the ます-form or the dictionary form. 書きますください and 書くください are wrong. ください follows the て-form: 書いてください. A wrong て-form also makes the request wrong: 待てください → 待ってください, 読みてください → 読んでください.
• Mixing up noun + をください (asking for a thing) and て-form + ください (asking for an action). If you say そのかばんをください in a shop, you are saying you will buy the bag. If you only want to look at it, say そのかばんを見せてください. Also, を is not put between the verb and ください: 見せてをください is wrong.
• Thinking that ください makes any request polite enough. When you ask a teacher or a boss for a favor, 〜てください can sound like an order. 先生、作文を見てください is understandable, but a softer request such as 作文を見てくださいませんか (N4) is safer. Adding すみませんが at the beginning also helps.

〜をください (please give me ...)

Noun + をください asks for a thing: 水をください (Please give me some water). Verb て-form + ください asks for an action: 水を飲んでください (Please drink some water). In the first sentence the speaker receives the water. In the second sentence the listener drinks it. Check whether the word before ください is a noun with を or a verb in the て-form.

〜てくださいませんか (could you please ...?)

Both ask someone to do something, but the feeling is different. 〜てください tells the listener what to do, so it fits instructions and things the listener is expected to do: 名前を書いてください. 〜てくださいませんか is a question, so the listener can say no. It fits favors for the speaker: すみませんが、駅までの道を教えてくださいませんか (Excuse me, could you please tell me the way to the station?).

In the N5 grammar section, 〜てください is mostly a test of the て-form: the blank comes before ください and the wrong choices are the ます-form, the dictionary form, the た-form or a wrong て-form (待て, 読みて). In sentence-building questions (★), remember that the て-form and ください stay next to each other. In listening, instructions such as 〜てください and 〜ないでください tell you what the person must do next, and task questions often ask exactly that. In the short-utterance questions, choose 〜てください when the picture shows someone asking another person to act, and 〜をください when they want a thing.
