Use this pattern to ask or tell someone not to do something. It is the negative of 〜てください. You often see it in rules and warnings, such as in a museum or a hospital. It is also used kindly, to show you care, as in 心配しないでください (Please don't worry).
§1Structure
Verb ない-form + でください. Group I: 吸います → 吸わない → 吸わないでください. Group II: 開けます → 開けない → 開けないでください. Group III: します → しないでください, 来ます → 来(こ)ないでください. In casual speech, ください is dropped: 〜ないで.

§3Common mistakes
- Making the negative from the wrong form. ✗ 撮りないでください and ✗ 撮らなくてください are wrong. Make the ない-form first (撮ります → 撮らない), then add でください: ○ 撮らないでください.
- Writing て instead of で. The form is always 〜ないで: ✗ 吸わないてください → ○ 吸わないでください.
- Getting the irregular verbs wrong. 来ます becomes 来(こ)ないでください, not ✗ きないでください. します becomes しないでください, not ✗ すらないでください.
§4How it's different from similar grammar
- 〜てください (please do)
- 〜てください asks someone to do something and uses the て-form: 窓を開けてください (Please open the window). 〜ないでください asks someone not to do it and uses the ない-form: 窓を開けないでください (Please don't open the window). Be careful: the verb form in front is different (開けて / 開けない).
- 〜てはいけない (must not)
- 〜てはいけません states a rule: something is not allowed. ここでたばこを吸ってはいけません (You must not smoke here). 〜ないでください is a request to the listener: ここでたばこを吸わないでください (Please don't smoke here). The request sounds softer than the rule.
§5How this shows up on the JLPT
In the N5 grammar section, the blank is often the verb before ください, and you must choose the correct ない-form + で (for example 話さないで, not 話しないで or 話さなくて). Another common question gives a short dialogue, and you choose between 〜てください and 〜ないでください from the context (for example after 寒いですから). In sentence-ordering questions, remember the fixed order: verb ない + で + ください.
