JLPT N4

〜ず(に)

ずに

without doing (written style)

← All N4 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

〜ずに means 'without doing' and has the same meaning as 〜ないで. It sounds more formal, so you see it mostly in writing, news, and notices, but some set phrases are also common in speech. The two actions are done by the same person: the second action is done in a state where the first one was not done, or in place of it. In written Japanese, 〜ず without に is also used to connect two clauses.

§1Structure

Take ない off the verb ない-form and add ず(に): 食べない → 食べずに, 言わない → 言わずに, 見ない → 見ずに. Two irregular verbs: する → せずに (勉強せずに), 来る → 来ずに(こずに). It is used only with verbs.

§2Examples

  • 何も食べずに、朝早く家を出ました。

    なにもたべずに、あさはやくいえをでました。

I left home early in the morning without eating anything.

  • 彼は何も言わずに、部屋を出ていった。

    かれはなにもいわずに、へやをでていった。

He left the room without saying anything.

  • 辞書を使わずに、日本語の新聞が読めますか。

    じしょをつかわずに、にほんごのしんぶんがよめますか。

  • 予約せずに行ったので、レストランに入れませんでした。

    よやくせずにいったので、レストランにはいれませんでした。

I went without making a reservation, so I couldn't get into the restaurant.

  • 昨日は疲れていて、おふろに入らずに寝てしまった。

    きのうはつかれていて、おふろにはいらずにねてしまった。

Yesterday I was tired and fell asleep without taking a bath.

  • 休まずに、3時間歩きました。

    こたえをみずに、もういちどやってみて。

Try it once more without looking at the answers.

§3Common mistakes

  • Making the ずに form of する like other verbs. Wrong: 勉強しずに / 予約しずに. Right: 勉強せずに / 予約せずに. する becomes せずに, and 来る becomes 来ずに(こずに).
  • Leaving ない in the form, or adding ずに to the dictionary form. Wrong: 食べないずに / 行くずに. Right: 食べずに / 行かずに. Take ない off the ない-form first, then add ずに.
  • Using ずに in the request 'please don't'. Requests use ないでください. Wrong: ここで写真を撮らずにください. Right: ここで写真を撮らないでください.

§4How it's different from similar grammar

〜ないで (without doing — everyday speech)
The meaning is the same; the style is different. 〜ないで is the everyday spoken form: 傘を持たないで出かけました. 〜ずに is more formal and common in writing: 傘を持たずに出かけました. Two more points: する becomes しないで but せずに, and only ないで can make a request (持たないでください).
〜まま (leaving a state as it is)
Both describe the situation in which the main action happens. 〜ずに focuses on an action that was not done: 電気を消さずに出かけました (I went out without turning off the light). 〜たまま focuses on a state that was left unchanged: 電気をつけたまま出かけました (I went out with the light left on). The two sentences describe the same scene from different sides.

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

In grammar-form questions, the form of する is the classic point: せずに, not しずに. When the choices include both 〜ずに and 〜ないで, look at what follows the blank: before ください only ないで is possible. In sentence-ordering questions, remember that に comes right after ず and that the main action comes after it (何も 言わ ずに 帰った). 〜ずに is common in reading passages because it is a written form; read it as 〜ないで and the meaning is clear.

§6Quick check (3 questions)

  • 1. Choose the correct ずに form of 勉強する.

    べんきょうする

  • 2. Choose the form that fits the blank: ここでたばこを__ください。

    ここでたばこを__ください。

  • 3. What does this sentence mean? 「兄は何も買わずに帰ってきた。」

    あにはなにもかわずにかえってきた。
