連用中止形(〜し、〜/〜く、〜)
れんようちゅうしけい
stem form used to connect clauses (written style)
This is the written partner of the て-form. Instead of 〜て、 or 〜くて、, written Japanese often uses the ます-stem or 〜く to join two clauses. The meaning is the same as with the て-form: actions in order, two facts side by side, or sometimes a light cause. It is common in newspapers, reports, essays and formal speeches, and it often appears together with である style. The last predicate of the sentence shows the tense and the politeness.
朝6時に起き、7時に家を出た。
あさろくじにおき、しちじにいえをでた。
I got up at six in the morning and left home at seven.
Structure
Verb: ます-stem + 、 (起きます → 起き、 / 行きます → 行き、 / します → し、 / 来ます → 来(き)、). ている → ており、 (降っている → 降っており、). Negative verb: ない-form without ない + ず、 (言わない → 言わず、 / する → せず、). い-adjective: 〜く、 (広い → 広く、 / ない → なく、). な-adjective / noun: + であり、 (便利であり、 / 医者であり、), or + で、. Verbs whose ます-stem is only one sound, such as 見る (見) and いる (い), are not often used this way; the て-form is used instead.

Common mistakes
3
- Using the dictionary form of an い-adjective or a verb before 、 instead of the connecting form. ✗ 部屋は明るい、きれいだ → ✓ 部屋は明るく、きれいだ. ✗ 駅に着く、電話をかけた → ✓ 駅に着き、電話をかけた.
- Making the wrong form for ている or for a negative. ている becomes ており, and ない becomes ず (する → せず). ✗ 雪が降ってい、 → ✓ 雪が降っており、. ✗ 宿題をしない、遊びに行った → ✓ 宿題をせず、遊びに行った.
- Using this form in casual conversation. It sounds stiff, like a news report. To a friend, say 昨日は映画を見に行って、ご飯を食べたよ, not 昨日は映画を見に行き、ご飯を食べたよ.
How it's different from similar grammar
2
- 〜て、〜て、〜 (actions in order, て-form)
- The meaning is almost the same; the difference is style. The て-form is used in both speech and writing: 駅まで歩いて、バスに乗りました (I walked to the station and got on a bus). The stem form is used mainly in writing and formal speech: 駅まで歩き、バスに乗った. The stem form sounds more formal and objective, which is why it is common in news and reports.
- 〜ずに (without doing)
- 〜ずに describes how an action is done: 'without doing A'. 傘を持たずに出かけた means 'I went out without an umbrella'. 〜ず、 with a comma joins two clauses, like 〜なくて、, and often gives a reason or a second fact: 雨が降らず、野菜が育たない (It doesn't rain, so the vegetables don't grow).
How this shows up on the JLPT
N3 reading passages, especially essays and news-style texts, use this form all the time, so you must recognize 起き、, 広く、, 便利であり、, 〜ており、 and 〜ず、 as 'and' or 'because'. In grammar questions, you may be asked to choose the correct connecting form (ており, ず, 〜く) for the blank. Remember that the last predicate shows the tense, so the whole sentence may be in the past even if the first verb looks like a stem.
