The て-form links actions that happen one after another, in the order they are said: 'do A, (then B,) and then C'. The て-form itself has no tense, so the last verb tells you whether the whole sentence is past, present, a request and so on. Because the order has meaning, 歯を磨いて、朝ごはんを食べます means you brush your teeth first.
§1Structure
Verb 1 て-form、(Verb 2 て-form、) last verb. Only the last verb shows the tense and the politeness (〜ます / 〜ました / 〜てください / plain form). Two or three actions are usual, and they are normally done by the same person.
§2Examples

あさおきて、かおをあらって、あさごはんをたべます。

お金を入れて、ボタンを押しましたが、切符が出ません。
おかねをいれて、ボタンをおしましたが、きっぷがでません。

§3Common mistakes
- Putting the past tense in the middle of the sentence. きのうデパートへ行った、くつを買いました and 行きましたて are wrong. The verbs in the middle stay in the て-form, and only the last verb becomes past: きのうデパートへ行って、くつを買いました.
- Linking verbs with と. と joins nouns (パンと卵), not verbs or sentences. パンを食べると、コーヒーを飲みます does not mean 'I eat bread and drink coffee'. Use the て-form: パンを食べて、コーヒーを飲みます.
- Forgetting that the order matters. おふろに入って、晩ごはんを食べました says that the bath came first. If you ate dinner first, change the order: 晩ごはんを食べて、おふろに入りました. When you only want to give some examples of activities without any order, 〜たり〜たりします (N4) is used instead.
§4How it's different from similar grammar
- 〜てから (after doing)
- 〜て、〜 simply lists actions in order, and you can link three actions: 起きて、顔を洗って、出かけます. 〜てから links two actions and makes it clear that the first one comes first or must be finished first: 手を洗ってから、食べてください (Wash your hands first, and then eat). Use 〜てから when the order itself is the point of the sentence.
- 〜たり〜たりする (doing things like A and B)
- 〜て、〜 gives all the actions in the order they happen: 日曜日は掃除して、買い物に行きました (On Sunday I cleaned and then went shopping). 〜たり〜たりする (N4) gives a few examples from many activities, and the order does not matter: 日曜日は掃除したり、買い物に行ったりしました (On Sunday I did things like cleaning and going shopping).
§5How this shows up on the JLPT
In the N5 grammar section, the blank is usually the verb in the middle of the sentence, and you must choose the correct て-form, not the ます-form, the た-form or a wrong て-form such as 行いて or 会いて. In sentence-building questions (★), put the actions in a logical order and keep the verb with a tense or 〜ください at the end. In listening and reading, questions such as 'What will the man do first?' or 'What did she do after that?' depend on the order of the verbs linked with 〜て, so note the order while you listen or read.
§6Quick check (3 questions)
1. Choose the form that fits the blank: きのうは友だちに__、一緒に映画を見ました。
きのうはともだちに__、いっしょにえいがをみました。
2. Read the sentence. What did the speaker do second? 「晩ごはんを食べて、おふろに入って、寝ました。」
「ばんごはんをたべて、おふろにはいって、ねました。」
3. Which sentence correctly says 'Tomorrow I will go to the library and borrow a book'?
