Common mistakes

  • Forgetting to conjugate both verbs into the た-form before attaching り — たり must attach to each verb's た-form, not mixing a plain form and a た-form (incorrect: 買い物したり、映画を見るたりします; correct: 買い物したり、映画を見たりします).
  • Forgetting the final する (or a conjugated form of it, e.g. していました、しません) at the end of the たり〜たり clause — the sentence needs a conjugated する to close the pattern grammatically (incorrect: 週末は買い物したり、映画を見たり。; correct: 週末は買い物したり、映画を見たりします。).
  • Assuming たり〜たり means the actions happened in that exact order or that it's a complete, exhaustive list — たり〜たり merely gives a few representative examples among several possible activities, in no particular fixed order.

How it's different from similar grammar

  • や(名詞の列挙)

や lists a few example nouns out of several, without being exhaustive: 本や雑誌を買いました (I bought things like books and magazines). たり〜たりする does the same job but for verbs/actions, listing a few example activities: 本を読んだり、掃除をしたりしました (I did things like reading books and cleaning) — や cannot be used to connect verbs this way.

  • て形(連続動作)

The plain て-form usually implies the actions happened in a fixed sequence, one right after another: 手を洗って、食べます (I wash my hands, then eat). たり〜たりする doesn't imply any fixed order and simply samples a few actions out of several possible ones, sometimes repeated: 手を洗ったり、掃除をしたりしました (I did things like washing my hands and cleaning — no particular order implied, just examples).

How this shows up on the JLPT

N4 grammar tests correct conjugation of both verbs into the た-form before たり, and reading/listening sections use たり〜たりする to signal that the speaker is giving a few representative examples rather than a complete list of everything that happened.
