や lists two or three things as examples and tells the listener that the list is not complete: there are other things too. など ('and so on') can be added after the last noun to make this meaning clearer. Use や when you cannot or do not need to name everything. When you name everything, use と.
§1Structure
Noun + や + Noun (+ など) + particle. You can list more than two nouns: A や B や C. など is optional. It comes after the last noun and before the particle: 本やノートなどがあります. With を and が, the particle is sometimes left out after など, but with に, で, へ it stays (お寺や神社などへ行きました). や joins nouns only.
§2Examples

§3Common mistakes
- Using や when the list is complete. If you bought exactly two things, a bag and shoes, say かばんとくつを買いました. かばんやくつを買いました tells the listener that you bought other things too.
- Joining verbs, adjectives or sentences with や: ×日曜日は本を読むや音楽を聞きます, ×この店は安いやおいしいです. や joins nouns only. For adjectives use the て-form (安くておいしいです), and for actions use the て-form or, at N4, 〜たり〜たりします (本を読んだり音楽を聞いたりします).
- Putting など or や in the wrong place: ×本などやノートがあります, ×本やノートをなど買いました, ×本やノートやがあります. など comes once, after the last noun and before the particle, and や does not come after the last noun: 本やノートなどがあります.
§4How it's different from similar grammar
- と (A and B: complete list)
- と lists everything: かばんの中に財布とかぎがあります means that a wallet and a key are in the bag, and nothing else is mentioned or implied. や gives examples: かばんの中に財布やかぎがあります means that there are a wallet, a key and other things. So when a question asks 'What is in the bag?' and only two things are there, と is the right choice.
- とか (casual 'things like A and B')
- Both give examples from a longer list. や is neutral and is used in both speech and writing: 週末は掃除や買い物をします. とか is casual and is mostly used in conversation, and it can also come after the last item: 週末は掃除とか買い物とかする. とか can follow verbs too, but や follows nouns only. In a JLPT reading text or a formal sentence, や is the natural choice.
§5How this shows up on the JLPT
In N5 Mondai 1, や is tested against と, も and か between two nouns. The strongest hint is など: when など follows the second noun, the answer is や. In Mondai 2 (sentence ordering), build 'A や B など' as one block and put the particle (が, を, へ ...) right after it. In reading and listening, や tells you that the list is not complete, so a statement such as 'The shop sells only A and B' is usually a wrong answer when the text said A や B.
§6Quick check (3 questions)
1. Choose the particle that fits the blank: 冷蔵庫の中に牛乳__卵などがあります。
れいぞうこのなかにぎゅうにゅう__たまごなどがあります。
2. 机の上にペンやノートがあります。 What does this sentence tell us?
つくえのうえにペンやノートがあります。
3. Which sentence is correct?
