〜など/〜なんか(例示・軽視)

など/なんか

Things like / the likes of (example, modesty, making light)

At N5 you learned など for listing examples (AやBなど). At N3, noun + など / なんか is also used with just one noun, in three ways. (1) To offer one example softly: このシャツなんかどう? (2) To be modest about yourself: 私なんか、まだまだです. (3) To make something sound unimportant or to show dislike: 宿題なんか簡単だ, 虫なんか大きらい. The meaning comes from the context, and なんか is the more casual and emotional of the two.

疲れたときは、温かいお茶などいかがですか。

つかれたときは、あたたかいおちゃなどいかがですか。

When you're tired, how about some warm tea or something?

Structure

Noun + など / Noun + なんか. が and を are usually dropped (お茶など飲みませんか, 野菜なんか食べたくない). Other particles such as に, と and で usually stay (私などには, 友だちになんか). など is neutral and fine in writing and polite speech; なんか is casual and used in conversation.

Common mistakes

3
  • Using なんか about another person or their things when you only want to give an example. なんか can make the noun sound unimportant, so 田中さんなんかに聞いても、わからない sounds like you look down on Mr. Tanaka. For a neutral or polite example, use など: 田中さんなどに聞いてみたらどうですか.
  • Using なんか in formal writing, a report or a polite talk with a customer. なんか is casual. In those situations use など: ✕ こちらの時計なんか、いかがでしょうか → ○ こちらの時計など、いかがでしょうか.
  • Mixing up this なんか with the filler なんか at the start of a sentence. なんか、変だね means 'Somehow, it's strange' and is a different word. The なんか on this page comes right after a noun: 雨なんか (things like rain).

How it's different from similar grammar

2
〜なんて (such a thing as / to think that)
After a noun, なんか and なんて are very close when they make something sound unimportant: 虫なんか / 虫なんて大きらい. The difference is that なんて can also come after a whole sentence to show surprise: 彼が遅れるなんて、珍しい (It's unusual for him to be late). なんか is not used after a sentence in this way. Both can also offer a soft example in casual talk (これなんかどう? / これなんてどう?), but なんか is more common for this.
〜でも (... or something)
Both can give a soft example in an invitation: お茶でも飲みませんか / お茶など飲みませんか. でも is very common in everyday invitations and sounds light. など sounds a bit more polite, and it is also used in statements and in writing: 冬は鍋料理などがおすすめです. Only など / なんか has the modest or negative uses (私なんか, 虫なんか).

How this shows up on the JLPT

In the grammar-form section, なんか / など often appears in a short dialogue where the speaker dislikes something or looks down on it (〜なんか大きらい, 〜なんか行きたくない), or is being modest (私なんか). The wrong choices are often さえ, しか, こそ and ばかり, so check whether the sentence needs a negative verb (しか) or means 'even' (さえ). In reading and listening, notice the speaker's feeling: なんか often shows dislike or modesty rather than a real list.
