〜なんて

なんて

Such a thing as / to think that (surprise, scorn)

〜なんて takes up a thing or a fact and shows the speaker's strong feeling about it. After a whole sentence, it usually shows surprise or disbelief: 'to think that ...!'. After a noun, it often makes the thing sound unimportant or shows dislike, like なんか. It is casual and emotional, so it is common in conversation.

おばけなんて、いるわけがない。

おばけなんて、いるわけがない。

There's no way ghosts exist.

Structure

Noun + なんて (虫なんて). A sentence in the plain form + なんて: verb (忘れるなんて, 合格したなんて), い-adjective (暑いなんて). When the sentence ends in a な-adjective or a noun, add だ: 静かだなんて, 兄弟だなんて. The part after なんて usually gives the speaker's feeling (信じられない, びっくりした, 珍しい) or is a verb like 言う or 思う.

Examples

  • 彼が約束を忘れるなんて、珍しいですね。

    かれがやくそくをわすれるなんて、めずらしいですね。

It's unusual for him to forget a promise, isn't it?

  • 一日で漢字を100個覚えるなんて、無理です。

    いちにちでかんじをひゃっこおぼえるなんて、むりです。

Learning 100 kanji in one day? That's impossible.

  • 試験に合格したなんて、まだ信じられない。

    しけんにごうかくしたなんて、まだしんじられない。

I still can't believe I passed the exam.

  • 「疲れた」なんて言わないで、もう少しがんばろう。

    「つかれた」なんていわないで、もうすこしがんばろう。

Don't say things like "I'm tired". Let's try a little longer.

  • あの二人が兄弟だなんて、知っていましたか。

    あのふたりがきょうだいだなんて、しっていましたか。

Did you know that those two are brothers?

  • 9月なのにこんなに暑いなんて、びっくりしました。

    くがつなのにこんなにあついなんて、びっくりしました。

I was surprised that it's this hot even though it's September.

  • テレビなんて、ほとんど見ません。

    テレビなんて、ほとんどみません。

TV? I hardly ever watch it.

Common mistakes

3
  • Using な before なんて after a な-adjective. When a sentence ending in a な-adjective or a noun comes before なんて, use だ: ✕ こんなに便利ななんて → ○ こんなに便利だなんて.
  • Using noun + なんて about something that belongs to the listener or a superior. なんて can make the noun sound unimportant, so 先生の宿題なんて簡単です sounds rude. To say politely that something surprised you, use another expression: 先生の宿題がこんなに簡単だとは思いませんでした.
  • Mixing up this なんて with なんて at the start of an exclamation. なんてきれいな花でしょう means 'What a beautiful flower!'. There, なんて comes before the adjective and means 'what / how'. The なんて on this page comes after a noun or a sentence.

How it's different from similar grammar

2
〜など/〜なんか (things like)
After a noun, なんて and なんか are very close when they make something sound unimportant: 虫なんて / 虫なんか大きらい. But only なんて comes after a whole sentence to show surprise: 兄が料理をするなんて、びっくりした (I was surprised that my brother cooks). Both can also offer a soft example in casual talk (このシャツなんかどう? / このシャツなんてどう?), but なんか (or など) is more common for this.
まさか〜とは思わなかった (I never thought ...)
Both are used for something you did not expect. まさか〜とは思わなかった clearly says 'I never expected it': まさか彼が優勝するとは思わなかった (I never thought he would win the championship). 〜なんて puts the surprising fact first and then gives your feeling about it: 彼が優勝するなんて、うそみたい (He won? It's hard to believe). なんて is more emotional and is often followed by words like 信じられない or びっくりした.

How this shows up on the JLPT

In the grammar-form section, look for a surprising fact before the blank and a feeling word after it (信じられない, 驚いた, 珍しい, 無理だ): that is where なんて fits. Also check the form before なんて: a な-adjective or noun sentence needs だ (静かだなんて). In reading and listening, なんて tells you the speaker's attitude, such as surprise, disbelief or dislike, which is often what the question asks.
