まさか〜ないだろう/〜とは思わなかった
まさか
surely not / I never thought that ...
まさか shows that the speaker thinks something is almost impossible. With 〜ないだろう or 〜はずがない, it means 'surely it won't happen': the speaker strongly believes it is not true. With 〜とは思わなかった, something that the speaker never expected has really happened, and the speaker is surprised. In a question like まさか〜の?, it means 'Don't tell me ...!'
まだ10月だから、まさか雪は降らないだろう。
まだじゅうがつだから、まさかゆきはふらないだろう。
It's still October, so surely it won't snow.
Structure
まさか + plain negative + だろう/でしょう: verb ない-form (まさか来ないだろう), い-adjective 〜くない, な-adjective / noun 〜じゃない/ではない. Also まさか + 〜はずがない. まさか + plain form + とは思わなかった/思いませんでした: verb and い-adjective directly (まさか負けるとは), な-adjective / noun + だ (まさか上手だとは, まさか先生だとは). Alone: 「まさか。」 = 'No way!'

Common mistakes

- Using まさか with an affirmative guess. まさか〜だろう needs a negative: ✗ まさか明日は晴れるだろう → ✓ まさか明日は雨は降らないだろう (or たぶん明日は晴れるだろう).
- Mixing up まさか with もしかしたら. もしかしたら means 'maybe' and goes with 〜かもしれない; まさか means 'surely not'. ✗ まさか明日は雨が降るかもしれない → ✓ もしかしたら明日は雨が降るかもしれない.
How it's different from similar grammar
2
- 〜はずがない (it can't be that ...)
- 〜はずがない is a judgment based on a reason, and it can finish a sentence by itself: 彼は今日休みだから、ここにいるはずがない (He's off today, so he can't be here). まさか is an adverb that adds the feeling 'I can't believe it'. It needs an ending such as 〜ないだろう, 〜はずがない or 〜とは思わなかった, and the two are often used together: まさか、あの二人が別れるはずがない.
- もしかしたら〜かもしれない (maybe, possibly)
- Both talk about possibilities, but in opposite directions. もしかしたら〜かもしれない says there is a small chance that something is true: もしかしたら電車が遅れているかもしれない (Maybe the train is late). まさか〜ないだろう says the speaker believes there is almost no chance: まさか電車は遅れていないだろう (Surely the train isn't late).
How this shows up on the JLPT
In N3 grammar questions, まさか is usually tested by its ending: look for 〜ないだろう, 〜はずがない or 〜とは思わなかった after the blank. Distractors like きっと, たぶん or もしかしたら go with different endings. In listening, 「まさか」 alone is a common reaction meaning 'No way!', and まさか〜とは思わなかった tells you that something surprising really happened.
