Shows that something is possible, but the speaker is not sure. The speaker feels that it may be true and may also be not true. It is weaker than でしょう / だろう, and it often goes with もしかしたら (perhaps). In casual speech it is shortened to 〜かも.
§1Structure
Plain form of verb / い-adjective + かもしれない; な-adjective stem / noun + かもしれない (no だ: ひまかもしれない, 病気かもしれない). Past and negative plain forms are also used: 忘れたかもしれない, 来ないかもしれない, 病気だったかもしれない. Polite: かもしれません. Casual: 〜かも.

§3Common mistakes
- Adding だ or な before かもしれない after a な-adjective or a noun: 病気だかもしれません and ひまなかもしれません are wrong. かもしれない attaches directly: 病気かもしれません, ひまかもしれません.
- Making the ending from 知る (to know) by mistake: かもしりません and かもしらない are wrong. The fixed forms are かもしれません (polite) and かもしれない (plain). Also, the verb before it must be in the plain form: 降りますかもしれません should be 降るかもしれません.
- Using かもしれない when you are actually quite sure. If you think something is likely, かもしれません sounds too weak; use 〜でしょう or 〜と思います instead. For example, when dark clouds cover the sky and you feel sure about rain, 雨が降るでしょう fits better than 雨が降るかもしれません.
§4How it's different from similar grammar
- 〜でしょう / 〜だろう (probably)
- でしょう (plain: だろう) shows that the speaker thinks something is fairly likely: あしたは雪が降るでしょう (It will probably snow tomorrow). かもしれない shows only a possibility, and the speaker would not be surprised if it did not happen: あしたは雪が降るかもしれません (It might snow tomorrow — or it might not).
- 〜はずだ (should be / is expected to)
- はずだ shows a strong expectation that the speaker reached from a reason: 会議は3時までだから、彼はもうすぐ来るはずです (The meeting is until three, so he should come soon). かもしれない has no such strong reason behind it; the speaker only mentions one possibility: 彼は今日来ないかもしれません (He might not come today).
§5How this shows up on the JLPT
In N4 grammar-form questions, かもしれない is tested in two ways: the form before it (plain form, and no だ after a noun or な-adjective) and the choice between かもしれません, でしょう and はずです according to how sure the speaker is. Words such as もしかしたら or わかりませんが in the sentence are hints for かもしれません. In listening and reading, かもしれません tells you the speaker is NOT sure, so do not choose an answer that treats the information as a fixed fact.
§6Quick check (3 questions)
1. Choose the form that fits the blank: 彼は今日、__かもしれません。
かれはきょう、__かもしれません。
2. Which sentence is correct?
3. The speaker does not know if Tanaka will come and thinks the chance is about half. Which sentence fits best?
