JLPT N4

〜はずだ

はずだ

should be / is expected to

← All N4 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

Shows that the speaker is fairly sure about something because there is a reason: a fact, a schedule, a promise or something the speaker remembers. It is a judgment from reasoning, not a simple guess. It is usually not used for the speaker's own intentional plans, and it does not mean 'should' in the sense of advice or duty.

§1Structure

Plain form of verb / い-adjective + はずだ; な-adjective + な + はずだ (上手なはずだ); noun + の + はずだ (休みのはずだ). Past and negative plain forms are also used: 入れたはずだ, 食べないはずだ. Polite: はずです. An expectation that did not come true: 〜はずでした / 〜はずだった.

§2Examples

  • 田中さんは今日休みですから、家にいるはずです。

    たなかさんはきょうやすみですから、いえにいるはずです。

Mr. Tanaka is off today, so he should be at home.

  • リンさんは日本に10年住んでいるから、日本語が上手なはずだ。

    リンさんはにほんにじゅうねんすんでいるから、にほんごがじょうずなはずだ。

Linh has lived in Japan for ten years, so her Japanese must be good.

  • 今日は日曜日だから、銀行は休みのはずです。

    きょうはにちようびだから、ぎんこうはやすみのはずです。

Today is Sunday, so the bank should be closed.

  • この店は有名だから、料理はおいしいはずです。

    このみせはゆうめいだから、りょうりはおいしいはずです。

This restaurant is famous, so the food should be good.

  • かぎはかばんの中に入れたはずです。

    かぎはかばんのなかにいれたはずです。

I'm sure I put the key in my bag.

  • 彼は肉を食べないから、この料理も食べないはずだ。

    かれはにくをたべないから、このりょうりもたべないはずだ。

He doesn't eat meat, so I expect he won't eat this dish either.

  • 荷物はきのう着くはずでしたが、まだ着いていません。

    にもつはきのうつくはずでしたが、まだついていません。

The package was supposed to arrive yesterday, but it hasn't arrived yet.

  • 「リンさんはパーティーに来ますか。」「ええ、来るはずですよ。きのう電話で約束しましたから。」

    「リンさんはパーティーにきますか。」「ええ、くるはずですよ。きのうでんわでやくそくしましたから。」

"Is Linh coming to the party?" "Yes, she should be. She promised on the phone yesterday."

§3Common mistakes

  • Forgetting な after a な-adjective or の after a noun: 上手はずです, 上手だはずです and 休みはずです are wrong. The correct forms are 上手なはずです and 休みのはずです.
  • Translating English 'should' (advice or duty) as はず. For 'You should eat more vegetables', もっと野菜を食べるはずです is wrong, because はず only shows what the speaker expects to be true. For advice, say もっと野菜を食べたほうがいいです.
  • Using はずです for your own plan. わたしは来年日本へ行くはずです sounds as if you are reasoning about yourself from outside. For your own intention or schedule, use 行くつもりです or 行く予定です.

§4How it's different from similar grammar

〜でしょう / 〜だろう (probably)
はず shows a confident expectation that comes from known facts or reasoning: 彼は1時間前に家を出たから、もう着いたはずです (He left home an hour ago, so he should have arrived already). でしょう is a softer guess and does not need a clear reason: 彼はもう着いたでしょう (He has probably arrived already — just my impression).
〜はずがない (there is no way that)
〜ないはずだ means 'I expect that ... not': 彼は今日は来ないはずです (I expect he won't come today — for example, he said he was busy). 〜はずがない is much stronger and denies the possibility itself: 彼が来るはずがありません (There is no way he will come).

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

In N4 grammar-form questions, はず is tested through its connection (上手な + はず, 休みの + はず, plain form of verbs) and through meaning: the sentence usually contains a reason with から or ので, and you choose はずです over つもりです, たいです or かもしれません. In reading, 〜はずです marks the writer's reasoning, and 〜はずでしたが / 〜はずなのに tells you that reality was different from what was expected, which is often what the question asks about.

§6Quick check (3 questions)

  • 1. Choose the form that fits the blank: あの店は月曜日は__はずです。

    あのみせはげつようびは__はずです。

  • 2. What does the speaker express in 「彼は大学で英語を勉強したから、英語が話せるはずだ。」?

    かれはだいがくでえいごをべんきょうしたから、えいごがはなせるはずだ。

  • 3. Choose the best ending: A「田中さんはもう帰りましたか。」 B「いいえ、かばんがありますから、まだ会社に__。」

    A「たなかさんはもうかえりましたか。」 B「いいえ、かばんがありますから、まだかいしゃに__。」
