JLPT N4

〜はずがない

はずがない

cannot be / there is no way that

← All N4 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

Strongly denies a possibility: from what the speaker knows, it is impossible or very hard to believe. It is the speaker's own strong judgment, based on a reason. It is often used when the speaker hears or sees something surprising and cannot accept it (そんなはずはない).

§1Structure

Plain form of verb / い-adjective + はずがない; な-adjective + な + はずがない (ひまなはずがない); noun + の + はずがない (大学生のはずがない). はずはない is also used. Polite: はずがありません / はずはありません. As a reply: そんなはずはない.

§2Examples

  • あんなにまじめな田中さんが、約束を忘れるはずがありません。

    あんなにまじめなたなかさんが、やくそくをわすれるはずがありません。

There is no way that Mr. Tanaka, who is so serious, would forget a promise.

  • こんなに難しい問題が、子どもにわかるはずがない。

    こんなにむずかしいもんだいが、こどもにわかるはずがない。

There is no way a child can understand such a difficult problem.

  • 有名な店の料理だから、まずいはずがない。

    ゆうめいなみせのりょうりだから、まずいはずがない。

It's food from a famous restaurant, so it can't be bad.

  • 試験の前だから、学生がひまなはずがありません。

    しけんのまえだから、がくせいがひまなはずがありません。

It's just before the exams, so the students can't possibly be free.

  • 彼はまだ15歳だ。大学生のはずがない。

    かれはまだじゅうごさいだ。だいがくせいのはずがない。

He is still fifteen. He can't be a university student.

  • さっき会ったばかりだから、彼がもう国へ帰ったはずはありません。

    さっきあったばかりだから、かれがもうくにへかえったはずはありません。

I met him just a little while ago, so he can't have gone back to his country already.

  • 「このかぎで開かないの? そんなはずはないよ。」

    「このかぎであかないの? そんなはずはないよ。」

"It won't open with this key? That can't be right."

§3Common mistakes

  • Mixing up 〜はずがない and 〜ないはずだ. 彼は来ないはずです means 'I expect he won't come' (a calm expectation). 彼が来るはずがありません means 'There is no way he will come' (a strong denial). Choose 〜はずがない only when you want to say something is impossible.
  • Forgetting な after a な-adjective or の after a noun: ひまはずがない, ひまだはずがない and 学生はずがない are wrong. The correct forms are ひまなはずがない and 学生のはずがない.
  • Using はずがない for 'should not' (a rule or advice). For 'You should not smoke here', ここでたばこを吸うはずがありません is wrong; it would mean 'It is impossible that someone smokes here'. For a rule, say ここでたばこを吸ってはいけません.

§4How it's different from similar grammar

〜はずだ / 〜ないはずだ (should be / should not be)
〜ないはずだ is the ordinary negative expectation: 会議中だから、部長は電話に出ないはずです (He is in a meeting, so I expect the manager won't answer the phone). 〜はずがない denies the possibility completely and sounds much stronger and more emotional: 部長がそんなことを言うはずがありません (There is no way the manager would say such a thing).
〜わけがない (no reason that / impossible, N3)
Both strongly deny a possibility, and in many sentences either can be used: こんなに高い車が買えるはずがない/買えるわけがない (There's no way I can buy such an expensive car). わけがない is studied at N3 and is common in casual conversation. At N4, learn はずがない first, and remember that both connect in the same way (ひまなはずがない, ひまなわけがない).

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

In grammar-form questions, はずがない is usually tested by meaning: the first half of the sentence gives a reason (あんなに練習したから, まだ子どもだから) and you must choose the ending that says 'impossible', not はずだ, かもしれない or つもりだ. In sentence-building questions, keep はず + が + ない in order and check の / な before はず. In reading, 〜はずがない shows the writer's strong disbelief, so the writer thinks the opposite is true.

§6Quick check (3 questions)

  • 1. Choose the best ending: 田中さんは魚がきらいだから、すしを食べたいと言う__。

    たなかさんはさかながきらいだから、すしをたべたいという__。

  • 2. What does 「リンさんが試験に落ちるはずがない。」 mean?

    リンさんがしけんにおちるはずがない。

  • 3. Which sentence is correct?
