〜そうにない/〜そうもない

そうにない/そうもない

unlikely to / shows no sign of

This is the negative of the 〜そうだ of appearance when it follows a verb. It means that, judging from the present situation, something is unlikely to happen or there is no sign that it will happen. 〜そうにない and 〜そうもない have almost the same meaning. For adjectives a different negative is used (おいしくなさそうだ).

雨はまだやみそうにない。

あめはまだやみそうにない。

The rain shows no sign of stopping yet.

Structure

Verb ます-stem + そうにない / そうもない / そうにもない (more emphatic). Polite: 〜そうにありません / 〜そうもありません. Past: 〜そうになかった. It is often used with potential verbs (帰れそうにない, 食べられそうもない) and with verbs for things the speaker cannot control (やむ, 終わる, 来る, 直る).

Common mistakes

2
  • Attaching そうにない to the dictionary form or the ない-form. ✗ 雨がやむそうにない / ✗ 雨がやまないそうにない → ✓ 雨がやみそうにない. Use the ます-stem: やみます → やみ + そうにない.
  • Using そうにない after an adjective. ✗ この映画はおもしろそうにない → ✓ この映画はおもしろくなさそうだ / おもしろそうではない. ✗ 元気そうにない → ✓ 元気ではなさそうだ / 元気そうではない. 〜そうにない / 〜そうもない is normally used with verbs.

How it's different from similar grammar

2
〜ないそうです (hearsay: I heard that ... not)
Plain negative + そうだ is hearsay. It passes on what someone said: 田中さんは明日のパーティーに来ないそうだ (I heard that Mr. Tanaka is not coming to tomorrow's party). ます-stem + そうにない is the speaker's own judgment from the situation: 田中さんは忙しくて、明日のパーティーに来そうにない (Mr. Tanaka is busy and is unlikely to come to tomorrow's party). Look at the verb form before そう to tell them apart.
〜はずがない (cannot be, no way)
〜はずがない is a strong denial based on logic or knowledge: 彼は今外国にいるから、ここに来るはずがない (He is abroad now, so there is no way he will come here). 〜そうにない is softer. It is based on how things look now: 彼は仕事が終わらなくて、今日は来そうにない (His work isn't finished, so he is unlikely to come today).

How this shows up on the JLPT

In N3 grammar-form questions, check the verb form before そう: only the ます-stem is correct (終わりそうにない, not 終わるそうにない). Potential verbs are very common in the correct answer (できそうにない, 行けそうもない). In sentence-ordering questions, keep そう + に / も + ない together in this order. In reading passages, the pattern shows the writer's negative outlook on the situation, not something the writer heard.
